Names gaining popularity - just don't get it

Ok, I completely understand that names are subjective and everyone has different opinions on the likability of a name, but some of the names that are gaining real popularity I can't help but be surprised at! I understand Isabella, sophia, olivia (even though I wouldn't personally use them) b/c, to me, they are beautiful names...but Evelyn and Vivian????? I've been seeing these on a lot of lists lately and I just don't get it! They remind me of 80's soap opera characters or something.

So now I'm curious....what names, that are gaining popularity of late, are you confused by?

Re: Names gaining popularity - just don't get it

  • I personally think Evelyn and Vivian are beautiful names.  I also think they are more popular on this board than IRL.  Evelyn is high up there (39) but Vivian is a lot lower at 164.

Here is a list of the names that gained the most in popularity over the past year.  Notice they aren't the classics for the most part...  https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/rankchange.html

Sure there are name trends/popular names that aren't my style.  I guess for me it is the boy-name-for-girls trend and the insert-a-"y"-for-"i" trend that annoy me the most.  And yes, some of the "classics" ring a little frumpy to me too.  But I like them a LOT better than all the Brileys and Kinsleys that seem to be popping up.

  • Landon, Harlow, Caden, Braden, Hayden and any other "aden" name. I'm just getting sick of the surnames trend and I wonder when it will end.

Also names Like Cohen, Adler, Levin, Rosen or other Jewish surnames being used as first names for non-jewish families. IMO it's the equivalent of someone who is not hispanic naming their kid Sanchez. I just don't get it.

I'm not sure how fast the following have risen to popularity, but these are all in the top 50 for 2009.

Girls : Madison, Alyssa, Kaylee, Nevaeh and Makayla.

Boys : Jayden, Aiden, Landon, Angel and Brayden.

I can see and understand arguments for the rest of the top 50 (even if I wouldn't choose to use the name), but for me, the names above are just terrible.

This.  I actually kind of find it offensive to the Jewish community.  Do non-Jewish parents who use these names not realize that they are Jewish surnames?  It just seems strange to me.

  • The -aden -aylee- -iley -ison brigade: Braden/Caden/Jayden/Bailey/Kaylee/Rylee/Briley/kylie/Madison/Addyson and all their other cognates. Blech.

Also, anything with an unnecessary Y, like Jordyn and Madisyn.

And Paisley. What's up with that name, really? I wouldn't name my child Polka Dot or Herringbone. When it's not reminding me of sofa patterns, it's reminding me of horrible upper east side snobs. It's so popular these days that it's cast its evil shadow on the formerly stand-up Paige.

I'm actually not a fan of Evelyn, especially not with the nickname "Evie" or the constant barrage of people naming their child something like Ellen or Ella or Eleanor but calling her Ellie, and I can't stand the influx of "Gracies." Grace is a perfectly nice name. Leave it.

But I love Vivian. It actually makes me think of a 40s glamorous movie star, not an 80s soap opera.

  • Wyatt, Fiona, Oliver, Archer, Cash, Hazel, all the ayden names, Harlow, Chance, Chase, Blake, all the city country names,Hudson,Clara(all old lady names that are coming back)Quinn(all common last names used as 1st names)

    I'd better stop now,.

Yes! Thank you. 100% agree on this one.

I am totally over this too. Evelyn is an old lady's name, plain and simple, and Ellie isn't as adorable as everyone thinks it is.

I'm also really baffled by the recent popularity of the name Silas. Tongue Tied

  • I will never understand the Addison/Madison trend. Ever.
  • Bentley, Kinsley, Hudson, Lincoln, Adalyn (and it's many spellings), Addison, Olive

  • As some other people have said, I'm SO tired of the "rhymes with Aiden" trend: Aaden, Cayden, Braden, Hayden . . . knock it off!  haha

  • Peyton, Grace, Jayden, Brayden

I actually like the old lady names :)

  • Well... given we just named our daughter Vivian and Evelyn made our list for a while, too... we have a different opinion :)

They're very nice elegant, vintage names for me. There's a theory of a 100-year rule for names, and both of those were popular grandma names really. We love them. Of course, things like Charlotte, Viola, Margaret and Katharina were on our list, too. We  like old and elegant.

I don't get the -aden names (although I like Aidan itself) or girl names with -son. I also have a hatred of the -ee names, like Kylee, Rylee, Brilee, etc. They're not adult names to me.

  • Any name that people butcher by adding extra letters to....like a y, e or n, when there really doesnt need to be one....I am all for unique spelling but some are just TOO much!!

I dont get the lure of Neveah, its a cute name for sure just not a secret that it is heaven backwards...lol

Mom of 4....and Sept 2013 BRIDE!!!!
  • Tatum confuses me....it looks and sounds like tater and tatas. It's also the name of a consulting firm in my area...just doesn't seem feminine at all.

Vivian reminds me of Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts and the word, Vavoom! :) Funny how names give off different impressions.

I know - I'm being mistaken for a hispanic male more and more these days.

  • I actually like vivian and evelyn.

Our runner up name for DD was Evie.  Really, just Evie - not short for Evelyn.  We may still use it at some point.

But I am way outside the naming norm anyway.  I am so over every other friend of mine naming a kid Isabelle/Isabella.

I LOVE Silas- not even sure why, I just think it's different.

Evelyn makes me think of this old lady I used to work with that would fart up a storm everywhere she went.

  • I actually love Evelyn and Vivian.  But I think there's a difference between old lady names that can translate to modern names and ones that do not.  Evelyn, Vivian, Beatrice, Annette = yes.  Mildred, Gladys, Ethel, Gertrude = no.

  • Like you, I totally understand why Isabella, Emma, and Sophia are popular. They are beautiful. But I think every variation of Mackynzie looks ridiculous, and I honestly don't even know the correct spelling!

Mackynzie, Mackynzi, Mackenzie, Mackenzy, McKynzie, McKynzi, McKenzie, McKenzy, Makynzie, Makynzi, Makenzie, Makenzy, etc

I also despise Alana Allana Alanna Allanna Alannah Alena Allena Alenna Alennah Elana Ellana Elanna Ellanna Elannah Elena Ellena Elenna Elennah, etc.

Pretty much any name that has more than one possible spelling, exept in the case of Margot or Margaux, for some reason.

  • Fiona, for sure.  Not to offend anyone, but yuck!!!
  • I love the name Vivian!  My husband won't let me use it though because he says it sounds snobby.  Never thought of it as an old soap opera name but I can completely see that now!

Names that are annoying to me are names that start with Mck or Mack...reminds me of the 90s (ie mackenzie, mckalya, mckenna).  I also don't like names that are completely made up and sound like you're just trying to be original (with NO regard for how weird the name sounds and the fact that your kid will be stuck with it forever).  ie Brecken or Bergen.

anyway, I love the old fashioned names (Isabella, Sophia, Olivia, etc) but they are too popular.  I had Sophia and Olivia on my list in 2004.  By the time I had a baby in 2009 they were both in the top 10 so I ditched them...

  • I don't like evelyn or vivian so I agree with you.

  • Jaxson/Jaxon/Jaxtin all bug me. Putting an X in a name doesn't make it euniqqe. The worst of all is Jaxxon, which I have seen locally.

Weren't Evelyn and Vivian originally boy's names? I know Vivian was, but I thought Evelyn used to be there too.

I get your point, but this a huge double standard. What about appropriating French names, Italian names, Irish names and English names? Like the most popular names in the country; Isabella, Emma, Olivia and names I've seen here like Siobhan, Fiona, Aine? If your policy is "Don't Appropriate", that's fine but it must be across the board. Amy is a classic French name and most of the Amy's I know have not a drop of French blood. Obviously, it speaks of the parents shortcomings, not the childs, but this fad is just part of a long line lack of identity in America. The waitress at my fave Greek restaurant is Cambodian. Go figure.

Also I would like to point out that last time I was on here (maybe a week back?) a Jewish woman posted that she wanted to name her daughter.....Noelle. I'm not kidding. And all the reply posts were very supportive (from mostly Christians, I believe) Obviously, it is very strange to name your Jewish daughter after the largest Christian holiday on the planet, commemorating the birth of a messiah you don't worship, like a Catholic naming their child Shalom or Hoshana, but everyone was very gracious about it. The moral of the story being to each their own, I guess.
