ugh first car accident

fender bender, but still equally unnerving w/ LO in the car!  Everyone is ok, just have to deal with getting the car fixed now.

Re: ugh first car accident

  • oh no, I'm sorry! Sounds like it was really no big deal in the big picture though - thank goodness!

    I don't think I ever posted but I totally got in an "accident" a few months ago.  I hit my mom's car in.my.own.driveway!!  Jack was in the car and my mom was in the backseat and I think her reaction made him cry - otherwise it wouldn't have phased him at all.  Embarrassing b/c my MIL was in the car too!!  It was kind of hard - my car had to get it's rear end straightened out.

  • OMG, how scary!  I still get nervous sometimes ever since my hit and run right after I found out I was PG.  Glad to hear everyone is okay!

    This was one of my questions to the adjuster on the phone.  They said when I bring my car in to bring the carseat also.  The onsite adjuster will evaluate it to see if it needs to be replaced.  I'm sure it's fine since it was just a fender bender, but I'm not sure I'm all that comfortable with that person's knowledge of car seats!

    However, I've already ordered the new Britax convertible seat, but not sure when it will get here - I can't seem to find a date anywhere.

  • this is what I looked at

    Child Restraint Re-use After Minor Crashes

    NHTSA Position

    • NHTSA recommends that child safety seats be replaced following a moderate or severe crash in order to ensure a continued high level of crash protection for child passengers.

    • NHTSA recommends that child safety seats do not automatically need to be replaced following a minor crash.

    • Minor crashes are those that meet ALL of the following criteria:

      • The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site;

      • The vehicle door nearest the safety seat was undamaged;

      • There were no injuries to any of the vehicle occupants;

      • The air bags (if present) did not deploy; AND

      • There is no visible damage to the safety seat

    • Clarifying the need for child seat replacement will reduce the number of children unnecessarily riding without a child safety seat while a replacement seat is being acquired, and the number of children who will have to ride without a child seat if a seat were discarded and not replaced. The clarification will also reduce the financial burden of unnecessary replacement.

    *****************************************************************************
    so, if you want any more insight take it to the nearest safety seat inspection place - they are trained to see if seats can be reused after a crash, for the second child, etc.

    If someone else's insurance is paying for it and you want a new one definitely keep pressing the issue, you could probably prevail :)

    In my case it was my fault and I didn't turn anything into insurance and feel confident that his seat is a-ok.

    Britax uses this, but I looked up Graco's policy (we have the SnugRide), and they recommend it be replaced no matter what.

  • interesting.  our seats follow the nhtsa

    edit to add - I felt completely confident in my choice - if I was hesitating at all I would have replaced it.  My crash was so insignificant that I'm sure the seat sustained more jolting and stress during it's shipment to my house, I have seen how UPS drivers heave things around at the warehouse...
