Therapist cancellation fee---is this normal?

I had to cancel my son's floortime/speech therapist today b/c my daughter is sick.  The therapist told me there would be a cancellation fee of $85---OUCH!  Here session rate is $160.

I completely understand and expect to pay a cancelation fee since it was less that 24 hours, but this seems really high.   Am I wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Therapist cancellation fee---is this normal?

  • I work privately (an SLP). I charge <30% of a sessions rate for a late cancellation...and I drive to people's homes.  So typically I am charging that fee when I arrive at their home and no one is there.

That rate is high, but I don't think uncommon, sadly.

  • We get charged 1/2 of the regular session fee ($200).  I understand, but I don't think it's all that fair.  A few weeks ago my son was sick with 102 fever and they wouldn't have wanted him there and we still had to pay the $100 for both of the days that he missed.

I can see it for chronic cancellations or no shows but I would think that they would give a break to a parent paying OOP with a sick toddler.

  • wow!  Parents in our county don't pay anything.  As a therapist I completely understand cancellations.  As long as I know at least as I'm driving there it's ok. (although as much notice as possible is better)  If I get there and no one is there I only get paid 5$ from my agency for gas...
  • I'm an OT and in both clinics where I've worked there's been a little leniency. Like you can miss 1 or 2 sessions over a 3-month period for illness/death/emergency (not to go to your son's soccer game/bday party/etc) and after that a fee is charged. I don't even know off the top of my head what the fee is. I don't think it's that high though. And I can tell you that often if a child is sick for a while I suggest not charging the fee - it just seems like it encourages parents to bring sick kids in to avoid the fee and I don't want to have all those sick germs around!
