Parenting after a Loss

So unbelievably stressed out

DD and I fly tomorrow.  Packing is just an unbelievably overwhelming task.  I'm going to just have to pay porters in all the airports to help me, but even so, how do I get all her diapers and bottles and food and toys in my carry-on?  I don't want to take a rolling carry-on that will actually fit everything because I'm not going to be able to take it down from the overhead bin and replace it by myself.  So I'm trying to stuff all the carry-on stuff into two diaper bags.

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just totally overwhelmed.

And the house is still a mess.  And I spent DD's first nap making DH a couple pitchers of his favorite mint iced tea, and a couple of pizzas for the freezer so I know he eats something for the first few days at least.

Re: So unbelievably stressed out

  • Do you have a backpack you can use as a diaper bag? Maybe that will make carrying things easier? And since they are squishy, it's usually easier to stow under the seat in front of you. Good luck!

  • I cannot imagine how stressful this must be for you!  But there's an end in sight and hopefully you can relax some when you get back to the states.  You are coming back to DC, right?  We should all do a GTG now!
  • I agree with the backpack and then a carry-on bag. Do you have a stroller that you'll be pushing her in?

  • I can't imagine how hard that must be!  When we took DH up north for our family reunion, I remember thinking how I couldn't imagine having to fly because we had so much crap to bring.  I definitely agree with the backpack idea.  Also, it might sound crazy, but I bet you could fit the diapers more easily if you rolled them up and put a rubber band around them like you were using them in a diaper cake or something.  It's a little bit of work, but I bet it would save you space.

I hope you are able to get everything done!  It always seems like no matter how much planning you do in advance, the day before is the absolute worst.  Hope you have a great trip!

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I have to look and see if we even have a backpack lying around here - I don't think we do!  I am taking a stroller and carseat (the carseat can fit into the stroller, so that helps).  On our way here, I wore DD and put the carry-on into the carseat and wheeled that through the airport.  But I can't wear her anymore - it's too much pressure on my hips.

I know it will all be fine, but the packing stage always stresses me out.

I will be back in DC after Labor Day - I'm doing a whole bunch of traveling over the next two weeks ... four flights in seven days, so wish us luck!
