Cruises, NBR

I'm looking to book a cruise for October. I found one on Celebrity cruise ship Summit for 6 nights to Bahamas and Carribean starting at $299 a person. Has anyone every cruised celebrity? Or ever been on the Summit? Did you like it? Any advice for someone whohas never cruised before on things to look for?

Re: Cruises, NBR

  • I've only been on Carnival and NCL, but they were both great!  The website cruisecritic.com has reviews by line and ship that are pretty helpful.  They also have some pretty helpful boards.  My best friend just went on her first cruise and really liked this article too:  https://www.budgettravel.com/bt-dyn/content/article/2010/04/03/AR2010040303597.html  Have fun!!!

  • I am going on my first cruise this November with Royal Caribbean.  Make sure you check the cruiseline's rules about pregnant women.  For example, Royal Caribbean does not allow any woman who is 24 weeks already or will enter the 24th week at any time during the cruise to board the ship.  I'm sure you're window is fine, but I would have never thought to check.
  • I've only ever cruised with Royal Caribbean and will never cruise with another cruise line!  They are AMAZING!!  A little pricier than most other cruises but if you book directly with them you can get some great deals!  They are quality and class all the way!  And they have the largest ships on the ocean so if you have any problems with motion sickness you'll never feel it on these boats! HTH!
  • I wish I was on a cruise ship right now, seriously one of the best vacations I've ever been on.
  • Thanks for the feedback ladies. I did see the regulation for not being within the 24th week, so I need to do it by/before November 7th, lol.

Yes... We've cruised Royal Caribbean 4 times and have talked to COUNTLESS people who have said that they would never go back to a Carnival cruise and that it's not even close to Royal Caribbean's standards.  We actually started laughing about the amount of people who warned us never to cruise with Carnival.  I've heard Disney cruises are equally amazing, but they're usually pretty expensive too.  You definitely get what you pay for!

  • I haven't cruised with Celebrity but I hear very good things about them.  My mom is doing a Panama Canal cruise with them in October.

I've cruised NCL and Princess.  NCL was great, Princess was wonderful but tends to have an older crowd so I wouldn't cruise with them again unless we went back to Alaska - of the mid-price cruise lines they are the best for Alaska.

I love cruising.  It is seriously my absolute favorite type of vacation - I don't care where we go - just as long as we're on a cruise ship and at sea.  And I swore I would hate cruising.  My advice - pay the extra for a balcony.  My favorite part of cruising is sleeping with our balcony door open (while at sea).  Every couple of weeks my DH tells me that he wishes we were on a cruise right now or hand one planned.  We won't be able to squeeze one in before the 23/24 week cutoff.

  • I have cruised on Celebrity twice.  I believe once was even on the Summit.  Celebrity has AMAZING food, but is more upscale overall than many other popular lines (Princess, NCL, Royal Carib., Carnival).  You'll find an older more middle aged crowd and less families than on other lines.  The entertainment is geared toward that crowd and most evening entertainment is over fairly early in the evening.  Dinner times are scheduled and the options outside of the dining room at night are limited, but the food is so great you likely wouldn't want to miss dinner.  Check out the cruise critics websites, as someone else suggested.  We had a great time on Celebrity, but find that in the end we prefer the slightly younger crowd and more relaxed feeling of Princess best.  Check out islands for safety too.  Even though Royal Carib. and Celebrity are the same company, the two lines go to dramatically different types of countries.  Good luck booking and have a blast!

  • We have cruised twice, once with Princess to Alaska and once with Crystal from Rome to Athens.  Crystal is AMAZING, but pretty pricey.

    Tips:

-think about what you guys like before you make on board decisions.

    • when you are vacationing do you like to sit around and relax or be up doing things?  If you just want to chill in your room then spend more on the room, but if you want to be on the go then spend more on shore excursions.
    • Do you prefer to eat dinner early or late.  Both of the cruises we were on had two sittings for dinner and we prefered the early one because then you could get in an early show and a late one.

I hope you have an amazing time!

  • I've cruised RC 3 times, and am planning a quicky cruise for my 30th bday for Oct of 2011 on Carnival.

Definitely head over to cruisecritic.com ... they have great reviews on the ships, and the message boards are really helpful  :)
