Bassinet vs. Pack n' Play in Bedroom

I think this question has been asked a million times but here we go again! i think Im changing my mind now.

we got a bassinet and a pack n play at the shower and im thinking of returning the bassinet b/c it's just one extra thing to have. how many of u are using the bassinet feature of ur pack n play in ur bedroom right next to ur bed for the first few months? if ur doing that, if u wanna have the baby out in the living room or elsewhere in the house in a pack n play if u have guests over or are working in the livingroom/kitchen, are u just gonna move the whole thing every time and then back into the bedroom at night for sleepy time or what? is that easy to do or a pain? is an extra bassinet just for the bedroom excessive or convenient??

Im not using the crib in the beginning.... i want the baby in my room next to me at first and then we can transition to the crib...

this is the plan at least....

Re: Bassinet vs. Pack n' Play in Bedroom

  • I have neither, but I did want to comment that I would not want to move my PNP b/t the living room and bedroom.  My PNP will more than likely stay in the living room and DD will sleep in her crib.  HTH!
  • Loading the player...
  • i have both. PNP I am keeping downstairs for naps, etc.....  we have a small bassinet that fits in our room much better than the larger PNP.  It was only 50 bucks, so i think it's worth it for the convenience.  I would hate to lug the PNP all over the house.
  • I would go with the pack n' play if you have that much room in your bedroom.
  • I think that I would never keep a pack n play out int he living room. That's what I used the papisan seat or swing for.

So if you think that could work for you, and it's not a big deal to actually have a bassinet, then just use your pack n play in the bedroom.

With dd, we needed a bassinet because we didn't have the space for a pack n play in our bedroom. This time we have more room and so we got a co-sleeper. I believe the weight limit is more on those than the bassinet feature on a pack nplay (just to keep in mind if you are planning on keeping baby in room for a while).

  • I think it is convenient and not excessive, but I live in a 2 story house and there is no way I can carry a pack-n-play up and down the stairs every day.
  • We're getting the arm's reach co-sleeper for our bedroom and a basic pack n play for downstairs in the living room, which we'll also use for travel.
  • I am using a PnP in our bedroom for the first month or so. I don't know how "portable" they are when it comes to moving them room to room on a regular basis though....I go by reviews that I read at the babies r us website so I can get a pretty good idea how easy they are to move around. Other than that we are just getting one and hoping it's a good one!
  • We are using a bassinet. The PNP will be for when we move around and baby comes with us.
  • I honestly think a bassinet is excessive.  We're using the bassinet feature on the pnp in our bedroom.  The pnp will never be setup in our living room, but our house is somewhat small.  I honestly wouldn't want to deal with trying to figure out where to store the bassinet once it's outgrown.
  • we're using a pnp with the bassinet/changing table in the bedroom and wheelin it into the living room when we need to. It won't be that difficult for us since we have oversized doors. We decided that it was more functional for us to have with all the traveling we'll do over the next few years. I just couldn't justify spending the extra cash on a bassinet.
  • We're doing the same thing as Mod:  PnP downstairs in living area, bassinet in our bedroom.

The bassinet is on loan, otherwise we'd never buy one or ask for one as a gift.  I think it's definitely a piece of furniture you can live without.

  • We are using a bassinet in our room at first, and using the PNP mostly for travel.
  • We don't have a bassinet and I plan on the baby sleeping in the PNP with bassinet if he isn't in his crib for the first few weeks.

DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption
  • We're going to keep a cradle in our bedroom for the baby to sleep in at night, and the P'n'P downstairs for naps and diaper changes during the day. The PnP doesn't fit in our bedroom, plus I really want to have something on both levels so that I don't have to be going up and down the stairs all day.

If I had a one-level home and room in my bedroom for the PnP, I'd just use that and not get the extra bassinet/cradle, but that's not the case.

  • We will have both because I want to keep the pack n play set up downstairs, and the bassinet upstairs.  I do not want to be moving it up and down the stairs.

  • im going to use a bassinet insted of a pack n' play for the bedroom for the first couple months.?

at first i was going to use a pack n' play, even though we have more then enough room in our bedroom to fit it, it just seams pointless to me. ?our house is a ranch so we dont need one in the living room. ? and both my parents have pack n' plays, so we dont need one in general.?

  • We are using a bassinet in the bedroom and PNP in other parts of the house.  PNP makes our small bedroom feel even smaller.
  • We have a pretty large bedroom in our apartment so we're using the pnp in the bedroom. We can always move it into the living room if we like for daytime naps. After our house is finished being built in February, we can transition her into the crib in her nursery.
  • We are keeping the PNP downstairs some where and using a co-sleeper for the first few months in our bedroom. It is easier and I am not about to move stuff up  and down stairs.

  • We are using the PNP in the bedroom for the first couple of months and do not plan on moving it until the baby is in the crib.  We have a swing and bouncer seat for the living room and feel we have plenty of options to put the baby in downstairs.  I was torn as well about wether or not to get a bassinet but most of my friends babies had outgrown their bassinet before they were 3 months which is when we plan on  transitioning to the crib and had to use the PNP in the bedroom anyways.
