So we might be moving to a multi-story townhome soon and my main concern is stairs. From what I can see so far, pressure-mounted gates can't be used for stairs? But since we're renting, we can't use a screw-mounted one. So WWYD in this case? Just pressure-mount gate the rooms instead? I don't know/understand why the pressure-mounted gate can't be used for stairs--is it because they have the possibility of coming off? If that's the case and it came off in the doorway to a room, then your LO can make his way to the stairs, then what?
Any baby gates recommendations? What should I look for when purchasing one? TIA!
Re: Baby Gates
I believe pressure mounted gates can't be used on stairs because they can be easily pushed over. Babies like to pull up on everything, so if they pull up on the pressure mounted gate, and/or rattle it, what if it gives? They'll fall head-first down the stairs!
I would either 1) Ask your landlord if you can install a baby gate and promise to remove it and repair the walls with *** and paint or pay to have it professionally repaired, or 2) Just install the gates and make sure to remove and repair when you leave.
You also need to think about the bottom of the stairs... I've seen it recommended that you also block them on the bottom. We are in the midst of handling this now. Alexa likes to climb the stairs and once last weekend she raced over and started crawling up them when we were in the other room! She is just so fast now, and when she's walking, she'll be faster, but still not safe to walk up stairs on her own.

i think this is the problem just b/c there is really nothing on the banister/railing side to hold the gate up. Upstairs is really just storage at our house so I am only worried about keeping baby off the stairs from the 1st story (baby won't be upstairs), but we need a wall mount b/c the iron banister is not thick enough to make a pressure gate sturdy enough (and if it is gate to keep the baby on the 2nd floor even more important)
this is what I would do...install & then fix it before you move out & landlord will never know it was there
ditto pp on the reason for not using pressure mounted ones for the stairs.
This is the one we have for the regular doorways. It was highly recommended to me and we love it. We only have 2 to keep him in the living room (they have extensions for this so you can use it on a wider frame). The other rooms upstairs all have doors, so we just close them when we want to put him up there. We haven't done the stairway one yet.
I also read that if you want to mount them at the top of the stairs, you have to make sure you have studs on both walls at the top or the gate won't do much good. Also make sure you mount it so that the door swings over the landing and not over the stairs, if that makes sense.
hmmm, guess I should check the top of the stairs to see if there are studs. We are also thinking of just putting a gate on the doorway of the landing to the stairs...
Our stairs are in an odd spot - enter in the backdoor there is a doorway to the left - our master BR, then a doorway to the right (with a pocket door we never use) that goes to the main living area and then directly straight are the stairs down. I would prefer the gate to be on the stairs so that we don't have to always use the gate to get to our bedroom and I don't want to block the pocket door even though we never use it.
Me, too!
