Working Moms

about had it with work....

I should say that I've dug my own grave:  I work as a surgical PA - my day can start anywhere from 6am on and goes until the work is done, usually around 5 but its happens at least once a month where i don't get out until 10pm.  I also am on call during weekends.  And so far, since coming back from maternity leave, I have been doing it with only a few issues here and there.

Now, I'm coming to find that I can't take it.  I see my kid, if i'm lucky, 30 minutes a day (not including the commute because she's usually rear facing and asleep).  I'm missing out on her walking and talking.

Unfortunately, I am not in the type of job where I can scale down my hours, work from home, or even go part time.  I've looked at other jobs locally (I'm willing to give up surgery which i LOVE for my family), but I'm also not in the position to seriously interview or anything, because BD is hired as a contract employee for another two months, and if I leave my job, K would not have any healthcare.

The other problem is that I'm in a very male-dominent field where ALL of my bosses have kids and don't see an issue....mostly because their wives stay at home while they are operating until all hours of the night and some have nannies to give the mom a break.  Not to mention, the boss I specifically report to is quite the opposite of sympathetic.  Add to the mix that we are severly short staffed and he doesn't realize it.

I just don't know what else to do besides moan and grown and continue to do it at this point.  Just needed to vent.

  • That sounds really, really crappy. I would be having a super hard time, too. I hope you can find a solution soon. :(

  • Thanks for listening to me whine. Ultimately, I know what the simple solution is.  Just right now its not that simple.
  • I don't know if it's possible, and I'm just throwing it out there, but our PAs have an hour cap (No more than 50 hours per 7 days.  Once they hit 50, they are done!).  Might it be possible to get on or maybe there is one but no one's told you because ... well, because you've been doing it without complaining? (Assuming you haven't been complaining!)

Like I said, don't know if it will help, but good luck!!!

I feel this same way all.the.time.  Different job, different circumstances, but I can understand your frustration.  I can't offer any advice other than I know how bad that feeling sucks.  I hope that something works out for you soon.

  • i have the same problem... kind of.  I'm pregnant with my first, but my work environment is male dominated and stressful as well.  The guys around me don't care if i breathe in exhaust fumes or have to lift heavy things, they tell me its my job.  I'm planning on quitting after the baby is born (luckily my fiancees insurance willl cover the baby) and am looking for somehting i can do froom home.  If i find any good solutions i'll let you know!  in the meantime, hang in there and good luck!
