ASD Moms- Carseat Question

I have a good friend who has two boys on the spectrum the oldest has an Autism diagnosis he is 4.5. She has a problem and I thought I could run it by you guys. She can not keep her son in his carseat. He is in a booster with the belt, and she has tried some type of lock (angel something) he just pulls and pulls until they break. I sugested a 5 point harness and she is sure he could not get out of this, the problem is he is a very big kid. Do you know of any carseats that are made for bigger/heavier kids? If not is there another option she can try? I have given her all the behavior tips I have used with kids in the past and nothing seems to work. Any ideas would be great, she is desperate!

Re: ASD Moms- Carseat Question

  • My DSs are quite large (older one is 4y3m about 42" and 45lbs) and he is still fine on the weight and height limits for a Britax Frontier, even though we have the old style and not the new Frontier 85. I can't imagine trying to just use a booster with him since he doesn't sit well enough to properly use just the seat belt - sounds like a very stressful situation.  I would guess my DS has at least another year or 2 in this seat, so she might want to try that.

I've heard that putting the bumpy side of velcro over the button that you press on the seatbelt (in a car or carseat) deters some kids from trying to press the button.  Many of them find the sensory aspect of it a deterrent.

  • That's hard. I hope this is helpful!

We chose this seat for DS specifically b/c he is 95%+ in everything all the time and we want him in 5-point harness as long as possible. It goes up to 65# before you start to convert it into a booster (it converts all the way down to just base), and you can use the seat itself up to 100#. I don't remember the height requirement, but my husband is 6' 7" and we made sure the height requirements would get him well past the 95% for a long time. The back pulls up quite a bit to give them a good fit.

Anyway, my son is more the type you have to beg and plead to get him out of the seat, so I can't speak to safety of getting out, but I know a couple of crafty twin girls who can get out of the chest buckle, but they can't get the lapbelt unhooked & they have the same seat.

Also with this one, it would be harder for HER to get him out, but you can twist the lapbelt latch backwards so the button would be much harder for him to leverage and push. He would HAVE to push the button to get out..... there would be no pulling until it broke, I feel sure. He hooked it backwards several times is how I know this ;)

  • If he's too big for the standard car seats, there are "special needs" car seats made by Britax and some other brands. You can find them at places like www.adaptivemall.com or www.especialneeds.com.

  • Sunshine Kids makes a Radian 85. We are very happy with our Radian 65, a similar seat with a lower weight limit. It is very narrow at the base, so it is great for smaller cars or a multi seat set up.
