Muscle Relaxers?

Hi all! I threw my neck out a couple of days ago and up to this point have been taking Tylenol (which hasn't helped at ALL) for the pain. It seems to be getting worse and I haven't slept in two nights because of it. I'm going to see the Midwife today, but I wondered if anyone has experience with any medication that is considered safe for this that I could mention? Normally I would just suck it up, but I can't move my neck at all I'm in so much pain.

TIA!

Re: Muscle Relaxers?

  • I was told that flexeril is category B, which I think is about as safe as they're going to rate things (tylenol is B).  That's what I take when my back is really bad.  Haven't taken it since getting pregnant, and haven't asked my OB about it, but it's worth asking about...

    Feel better!

  • I know later in the pregnancy they'll give out muscle relaxers if you're having Braxton Hicks too early, but dunno about now. It never hurts to ask, though!

  • Yeah, they just told me Tylenol is the only thing I can take. Boo!
  • Try hot packs and as your muscles heat up, some gentle stretching.

  • My sister just had a healthy baby girl and through out her entire pregnancy she took muscle relaxers every 4 hours. I know-- sounds horrible, but she had no choice. She got in a car accident a few years ago and has lasting injuries. The doctor said the stress of getting off the medication was worse for the baby than taking it. Any way, the baby is healthy as can be. My point is that she took them consistantly for the entire pregnancy, so I can't see taking them for just a little bit could be bad.
  • I have a terrible back and asked my OB about this as well (Tylenol sucks!). She started me on some stretches but said if those do not work that there are some narcotics and some muscle relaxers that are safe. Flexeril for example (I saw pp had mentioned this as well). Also, I work in a dental office and when pregnant women need an analgesic we will put them on a short course of Tylenol 3, Vicodin, or Darvocet, but these should not be used long term during pregnancy due to inconclusive studies. I would just ask about the muscle relaxers as some are ranked in the same safety category as Tylenol (category B).
