Cord Blood Donation - LifeSource

Anybody here donate their baby's cord blood? I am thinking of doing it but when I asked my doctor about it today he said it can be expensive.  I would rather donate it since it seems like there is such a small chance my child would ever be able to benefit from it - not to mention how expensive it is.

I requested more information through LifeSource (that seems like the main place who does it in the Chicago area) but thought it would be good to hear from people who actually donate it.

Its a shame they make it so hard to donate something that could benefit so many people.

  • We donated DS cord blood. You will need to contact the company a couple of months in advance and fill out paper work so they have yours and your DHs medical history. They will send you a kit that you will take with you to the hospital. We also let all of our nurses know and our doctor know that we were donating and left our kit out so they wouldn't forget.  I think they billed our insurance for collecting the cord blood and it was covered. We had no problems with it. We used https://www.givcord.org/ they list the hospitals they work with. The hosptial handles the pick up, so you just have to do the paper work and then the hospital handles the rest. We got a cute certificate afterwards that says.

  • We're going with Lifesource to donate our cord blood. If you go to lifesource.org there's a section where you can request that a kit be sent to you. They cover the cost of the collection, but you need to make sure you have all the paperwork filled out and ready to go before you go to the hospital to deliver.

  • It's not hard to donate.  I just recieved my kit in the mail yesterday.  I just told LifeSource my doctor's name, the hospital I am delivering at and my due date and they shipped me a kit to take to the hospital with me when I go into labor.  It is expensive to bank your cord blood, but if you donate it, and would need cord blood, LifeSource will check to see if your child's donated cord blood is available and you can use it.  There's no charge to donate your child's cord blood.
  • I'm trying to donate through lifesource, but the form on their website doesn't seem to be working, and I can't get a hold of anyone on the phone!  :(
