Pregnant after IF

steak question

i read that i'm not supposed to eat pink meat...i had one well done steak, and quite frankly, it wasn't very good...i'm a medium rare girl at heart.  we are going out to dinner on saturday night for my birthday, and i've been craving a good filet.  how bad is it to have a medium steak?

Re: steak question

  • I will be asking my doctor about this next time I see her. DH and I just made plans to go to Indianapolis for Columbus Day weekend in october, and he made reservations at out favorite steak house there. I am not usually a red meat eater, but I always order a medium steak when we go to a nice steak house.

FWIW, I have a close friend who ate medium steak all the time when she was pregnant with her daughter, but I think it was against doctor's orders. Her daughter is totally fine though.

Let me know what you decide to do!

  • I ate medium rare steaks while pregnant.  Embarrassed  I just couldn't stomach well done meat.

From what I understand, the risk isn't greater than what you normally take when eating under cooked red meat.  There isn't additional risk to the baby.

  • I've been eating medium steaks thus far. As long as they have a warm red center can't imagine it being any more dangerous than it is when your not pregnant. JMHO.

  • I've always considered pink to be fine, but stay away from red.  The juices should not be red, either.  I go back and forth on how to order it, though.  Normally I would say medium and not worry, but I've had a few served to me that still had some red.  If you send them back, they give you charcoal.  So, usually I suck it up and say medium well and just hope they don't go too far...
  • I had a medium (kobe beef) burger this weekend.  It was so amazing.  I felt guilty because I dind't know if it was ok or not... a friend said her ob told her if it's a reputable establishment your ordering from, the risk would be no greater than it would if you weren't pregnant.

    Now I'm hungry :)

  • I've been eating my steak medium and I haven't had any problems. IMO, as long as it's cooked through you're fine.

  • I think the biggest concern is food poisoning, and certain bacteria--like listeria can cause late term miscarriages.  That is why they say not to eat lunchmeat.  That being said, in the US, we have pretty high standards, so i don't really worry too much about it.  I remember asking my OB about lunch meat, and he said he only heard of 2 cases since he has been practicing, and they were somewhere across the country.

I have eaten medium steaks.  I can't stomach well done either.  I just wouldn't go to Mexico and order a medium steak!

  • I would be more comfortable with medium steak from a reputable establishment. I would be more concerned with undercooked burgers.

  • I have no clue as I really don't like it when meat has any kind of red or pink juices.  I always order mine medium-well.  Maybe compromise and do medium-well if you are worried.

  • I've been having my steaks well done, but from what I have read there is no additional risk having them at medium. I'm just a nervous nellie.

  • I only ordered steaks and burgers medium-rare while I was pregnant.  I ate at places that I felt had good-quality food, and I didn't worry about it.  Everything was fine.  I would rather not have steak at all than eat it anything more than medium-rare.

  • I didn't realize medium well steak was even a risk.  It's cooked, right?
