Downing drink at mealtime

My DS will finish every drop we put in his sippy before he eats. He likes mile and juice equally. When he's drinking and we pull his sippy away for him to take a bite, he screams and screams. We still make him take a bite through the screaming, but it's a fight every night except pizza night. He could care less about his sippy when there's pizza.

We do only give him a couple of oz at a time so when he's done he has to take a bite while we refill, but we end up refilling a lot at mealtime.

 Anyone have this happen?

  • Dylan does this from time to time.  From 1 yr to about 1.5 yrs he'd down 6-8 oz of milk every morning before touching his breakfast.  I figured he was just ravenous and the milk took the edge off.

I usually attribute it to growth spurts, serious hunger, or plain thirst.

In your shoes I'd go milk only to maxamize the nutrition per calorie.

Do you think he's eating less because he's full on fluid?

Have you tried offering a sippy of milk about an hour before dinner to see if that curbs it?

I personally don't think it's anything to worry about as long as he's still eating well!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • Have you tried not offering a drink with dinner? We have this problem too. And if we don't put it in front of him, he will usually eat, at least a little bit, before drinking.
  • If DS isn't eating well and only wants to drink his milk, I will tell him that he has to have so many bites of peas or whatever, before he can have milk.  He will whine sometimes, but he eats it to get the milk!

Although, that really is only started working really well in the last few months.  Before that, I just wouldn't give him the drink until after he ate.

  • Have you tried just offering water with his meal.  Maybe the water won't be so interesting and he'll eat more then after his meal is done you could offer him his regular drink.
  • DS was that way around that age.  He just LOVES milk!  We got to the point where we didn't give him anything to drink until he was done eating, or had eaten a certain amount.

Our ped also recommended switching to a cup (not a sippy) at mealtimes because it isn't as easy to gulp down a cup of milk versus a sippy.  We do that now and it has really cut down on his intake at meals.

  • I have not had this issue but I know my sister does not give her kids their drink right away at meals as she doesn't want them to fill up on the drink.  She gets it only after they have started eating.  She also does not give them a ton and refills their glasses towards the end of the meal if they want more.

  • my son did this and then he would hardly eat his meal.  i then started giving him water only for lunch and dinner...i didn't mind that he have juice or milk with breakfast...and he likes breakfast way to much to not eat the food....but since i have changed his drinks to water only...he definatley eats more food and drinks less.
