How was your experience at Memorial Herman-TMC?

This is my first baby and my doctor only uses Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center so I was wondering if anyone would like to share their experience with the hospital?  As my due date gets closer I'm getting really anxious about everything.....we are going to the maternity tour on Saturday so hopefully that will help.  Thanks!

Re: How was your experience at Memorial Herman-TMC?

  • i had both my girls at memorial hermann TMC and had a good experience.

with my first (in 2007) i had an awesome l&d nurse, but was a little disappointed in the PP nurses.  i only had one very helpful nurse during my 3 day stay.  the others weren't unhelpful when i asked for help, but it was my first baby and sometimes you don't know what you don't know!

my experience last week, however, was different.  every single nurse i had was great... attentive, but not overbearing... very timely with anything i asked for...

besides the nurses, everyone i encountered was great, from the transport people to the baby registrar... i even got a phone call a few hours after my discharge to make sure i got home safely... the room is spacious, the food is good (you can order when you're ready to eat - like room service)

let me know if you have any specific questions, and i'll be happy to answer them.... congrats on your impending arrival!

  • I had my daugther there in 2008 and had a good experience. My doctor only delivers there too and I was nervous about it as well. But overall everything was good. I did have to wait awhile for a surgery room to open up before my C-section so that made me a little anxious. And I had one awful PP nurse but the rest were great.  Let me know if you have any specific questions!

  • I delivered DD at Memorial Hermman TMC and had a great experience!  I loved my 2 labor/delivery nurses and only had 1 post-partum nurse that wasn't my favorite, but she wasn't enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I thought I received excellent care and my post-partum bed was so comfy!  I also really liked the food and you get a birthday cake for your new baby (although we managed to somehow lose our cake on the way out of the hospital).

All in all, a great experience!

  • I delivered there and will be delivering there again.  I had a mostly good experience.  I delivered there 2 days before Thanksgiving and the place was packed!  So, there was a mixup after I delivered getting me into a post partum room.  My baby was on that floor in the nursery and I was still in the delivery room.  My l&d nurse (who was amazing) moved me herself and got me reunited with Dylan.  Other than that, I had one crappy post partum nurse.  My other post partum nurses were fantastic, and my l&d nurse was fantastic.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

  • I had my 2nd there and was very happy with the experience. I was in labor a long time (24 hours in L&D) and so I went through 4 sets of L&D nurses. The first set were just OK, but the others were great.

I don't really have a lot of memories of pp nurses, but then I didn't need much from them either and I was out of there pretty quick.

I chose this hospital because of their pp policies because I wanted to keep my baby with me as much as possible and I was very happy with how that part of it went.

My only complaint would be that parking is expensive IMO, and that the hospital layout is confusing with lots of long hallways and visitors tend to get lost before they find your room.

  • I've a baby there in 2008 and another in 2009.  I loved my L and D nurse SO much the first time I requsted her for my second delivery (induction so I knew the day).  She was just as wonderful the second time around!  I had a very good experience except 1 of the PP nurses (must by 1 bad nurse floating around).

I'm just going to throw this out there because of something that happened to me.  If you want and epidural make sure you ask for an actual Doctor.  Both times they sent a resident.  The first time I refused and waited for a doctor and had a great epidural.  The second time I didn't have time to wait (was already a 10) and used the resident.  It didn't work, he tried to compensate with other drugs that didn't work until after the birth and made me sick...  If I were having another I'd make it known the minute I walk in the door that I want a doc for my epi and not even to send the resident into my room..

Everything else about the hospital was great.  The rooms were nice, visitors were welcome, you can have as many people in the room as you like, got to keep my babies all but about 20 minutes...

  • I had a wonderful experience there delivering in 2006. A few of the PP nurses left something to be desired, but overall everything else was great!

  • i also had a GREAT experience with both of my deliveries there, in 2007 and 2009.  All of my nurses were super and helpful and we loved the cake too.

i would definitely have another baby there if we decide to.  but like one previous post, i'd ask for a doc not a resident for the epidural.  (resident punctured my dura and left me with spinal headache then two blood patches over the next couple of days.)

  • I also had a great experience at Memorial Hermann.  Like others, I did have a couple issues with pp care, but nothing that would keep me from going back if we should have a second child.

  • Any recent experiences here to share? thanks!
  • I did the tour, a couple weeks ago. What did you think? I liked it overall, and LOVE their focus on skin-to - skin right after birth, and breast feeding focus, and that they almost require the baby to stay in the room with you! There were other things I didn't appreciate as much as a different hospital that I toured.
  • I gave birth there on June 3. I was admitted 3 times before the baby was born due to high BP and then preeclampsia. The last time I was admitted I spent a week in there before my baby was born early at 32.5 weeks. I seriously wish I had gotten phone numbers for 2 of my nurses- I LOVED them. One of them was on top of my issues and actually was the one who became worried and notified my doctors about complications that came up suddenly. Those doctors responded like a SWAT team within what seemed like 1 minute, it was pretty awesome.

My baby was in the NICU for 3 weeks. Emergency C Section so I didn't get to do a lot of the immediate things I was hoping for like skin-to-skin and breast feeding. Everyone was amazing, and they let me do those things as soon as I was physically able to. There were a couple of times I felt there was a minor language barrier with foreign nurses, but they knew what they were doing.

My one complaint was with the parking- I mean, the bill was over $100 grand- you think they could tack that parking on and make insurance pay for it! Between my husband and I we probably spent an additional $500 in parking fees that month.
