How to introduce a security object (lovey)?

My son uses my hand as a security object. When he gets sleepy, he will start sucking his thunb and wants to hug my hand...thats how he falls asleep. He doesn't sleep in his crib but on our bed so I can sit next to him. It is getting old and I am getting tired of sitting next to him for 20-30 mins while he falls asleep. I wanted to introduce the seahorse as a security object. How do i go about doing that?

    DD has a soft, fleece type pink lamb (the body is a blanket) and one night I just started rubbing her face with it and it calmed her down (she was prob about 5 months). I did that every night for a few nights then eventually she would grab it and rub her face with it herself. Now she takes it everytime she sleeps...naps, bedtime, etc. In the beginning I would switch it up a bit...I'd give her a soft washcloth, different soft loveys b/c I want her to take anythign soft, not just that particular thing...so if we ever lose it (although we have 6 of them!)...she'll take anything soft.

    Well Casey just suddenly got attached to this one blanket that she would get when taking a nap.  I think it was around 12 months she really latched onto it.  Now she's obsessed with it. 

    So I would start giving him whatever object (seahorse) you want as his lovey and just keep giving him that.  Hopefully he'll catch on to it, but if he doesn't maybe lay out 3 different things and tell him to pick one thing to go night night with.

    When DS was around 6 months I took one of his carters just one year animals and slept with it up my shirt for a couple nights (weird I know) but I wanted it to smell like me.  It worked!  He has been attached to that thing ever since.  We bought 3 others and I didn't have to put them up my shirt.  The bond was already there.
