a TTC question- Shettles and OPKs

Here is my "back post":

https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/40886286.aspx

So I want to make sure I'm not missing anything here.   We want to ttc a boy- there may or may not be some truth to the Shettles method, but I figure it doesn't hurt to try. According to Shettles, you should have sex as close to ovulation as possible if you?re trying for a boy, right? Well, if you're TTC using OPKs- wouldn't you have sex when it says you are ovulating? So according to shettles and using OPKs, wouldn?t everyone be ?trying? for a boy? Does my question even make sense?

So if you?re TTC a girl, you want to have sex a few days before you ovulate. Then there would be no point in using OPKs, right? Am I missing something here? (could be- it?s early and I have a cold!!)

Thanks in advance for humoring me. J J J

Re: a TTC question- Shettles and OPKs

  • Well, with a couple of months of history and knowing when you ovulate you could adjust.  Like if you know you ovulate on day 14/15 you could have sex on day 12 to  try for a girl based on what you're saying

  • Here is my story. I had sex the first night that I got a positive OPK. 9 months later I had DD. Maybe if I had waited a day or 2 I would have had a boy????

  • We had sex during positive OPK readings and got one boy and one girl, for whatever that's worth...
  • I dont know what OPK's means? But I heard that if you go by your body temperature its more accurate of exactly when you are ovulating then the sticks you can use

  • If you want a boy, I would have sex a day or two after getting a positive OPK b/c when you do get a positive OPK, that means that you are gearing up to O, usually 24-48 hours later...that's when you need to hvae sex. With preg #1, we had sex every other day from getting the + OPK and had a girl...with this baby, we weren't really trying, but I was charting (the first month charting since DD)...we wound up having sex the day I O'd and it's a boy.

  • If you REALLY want to try for a boy you should track your temp (a pain, I know) in addition to using your OPKs.  Reason being, some people ovulate the same day as the + OPK (me) and other's don't ovulate for as long as 48 hrs after the + OPK.  The only way to know when you ovulate in regard to your OPK is to chart your temperature, at least for a few cycles.

For me, having sex the day of my first positive OPK would result in a boy, in Shettle-land.  For others with a longer, slower LH rise, having sex the first day of a positive OPK would result in a girl.
