Parenting after a Loss

My child is NOT "chunky"! (Snappy comeback needed)

DS is about 20 lbs.& is a healthy, BF baby.  So why do people feel the need to make mean comments about his size???  A neighbor yesterday said, "I bet he never misses a meal." His wife added, "He's such a chunk."

I'm still mad.  Anyone have a good reply?

  • I don't think they meant it in a negative way. I say that as well when I see a baby with all the rolls and chins, and it's always meant to be a compliment. I love a roly-poley baby.

  • We have the same thing going on here, I don't let it bother me though. She is chunky and I LOVE IT!! She is not fat, she is healthy looking. My dad always introduces her as the baby that ate another baby. Babies are all kinda chubby at firs, but once they become mobile they usually slim down. Your LO is perfectly perfect :)

  • I have not dealt with that so I am not positive how I would feel. I doubt any of thise comments were in mean spirit. I would say the same thing if I saw a chubby baby... it is OK for babies to have a little meat on their bones

i agree that everyone loves a chubby baby

  • I always comment that this is the only time of your life where being called chunky is a compliment!

This!  I love chunky babies... the more rolls the better!  I'm sure they mean it in a complimentary way - he's healthy!

  • People don't realize how there comments hurt!  Yesterday 4 diffrent people commented on how little my Lo was.  I don't think he's that little considering he was born at 2ilbs 10 oz.  He's 17 pounds now.  Sorry they told your baby is chuncky.   I think he is adorable....

This!  I think of it as a compliment - they're probably thinking how cute he is and how they want to squeeze his thighs and cheeks.

  • We hear this every day. It bothers me too but I think it's because I'm overweight and sensitive about this stuff. I know they mean it as a positive so I try to smile and say something like, "yep, he's a good baby." And then I try not to dwell on the comments too long.

  • I agree with pp that I wouldn't let it get to you.  People have always made comments about how I need to feed LO more or about how she looks hungry, etc. She's always been a skinny baby.  It used to bother me because I felt like people were judging me as a mother.  Now I just say "oooh, thanks but she eats plenty" and smile.  It really doesn't bother me anymore.
