XP: PISA vs Freestyle

I posted this on BFing board too but am looking for advice :)

I'm sure this has been asked before but I appreciate any input!! :)

I've been renting a Symphony and love it, but I'm moving so I have to return it. I've been thinking about buying a pump- which do you use - PISA or Freestyle ? The staff at my local baby store was selling me hard on the Freestyle - is it worth the $$

I'm a SAHM and pump to keep up my supply 2x -4x a day

TIA!

Re: XP: PISA vs Freestyle

  • I have a PISA and really like it, though it was an adjustment from using the Symphony I'd rented; the Symphony has a digital readout and the PISA does not. That said, I've heard very mixed things about the Freestyle (problems with the motor and the battery back). From what I understand, most LC's recommend the PISA overall.

I got the PISA in the backpack and purchased a hands-free pumping bra. So I don't see how it's all that different from using a Freestyle. Papetvet bought a Freestyle from a LC on Ebay, so I'm sure she can weigh in on it!

  • I don't know what the cost difference is, but I have a PISA and a pumping bra as well. Actually, I have the PumpEase (from Amazon), which isn't a bra but goes over your bra so you can wear whatever bra you want when you pump.

My pumping bra goes over what I'm wearing as well. It's SimpleWishes, and I got it at Target.

  • If you SAH, I think the PISA is more than enough for what you need it for.  I pump at work and use the PISA and love it.  I think you would only need something more if you EP or something.
  • I have the freestyle and really like it.  I've had no problems with the battery/motor.  The hands-free contraption that it comes with is definitely NOT a reason to buy the freestyle -- I actually have a handsfree bra I use instead.  The real reason for the freestyle is the portability.  It is tiny, and is designed to run on the battery, so you really never need to worry about plugging it in.  I SAH and when I was pumping a lot, I liked that it was super easy to pump and carry it around with me while I got other things done.  I had a symphony in the beginning when I was trying to build supply and found that I got the same amount of milk no matter if I used the symphony or the freestyle.  The freestyle does NOT use the same parts as the symphony (but I think the PIS does) so if you have/want extra sets, you'll need to buy new ones.  Both pumps are great, so you can't go wrong!

This. I've been really happy with my PISA.

I also just got the softer breastshields and DEFINITELY recommend getting those too. They stay put better - they don't rub and seem to make pumping faster/more efficient.

Interesting.. I actually HATE the soft breastshields.  The freestyle comes with them, and I found them painful and annoying, and prefer the hard ones.  I guess each persons body is different!
