Real food for dinner=SuCCCCEEESSSSS!!!

I have been giveing LOs fruit as a snack during lunch and afternoon snack so tonight i thought i would try peas and carrots and chicken.  I bought a can of peas and carrots diced (microwaved for 15 seconds to warm) then bought a chicken roaster from the store yesterday gave to them cold.  They were in HEAvEN!!!! DS was so excited and doing his typical "more" dance he has started lately.  DD was a big fan of the chicken but i could tell after 20 min she was getting tired of trying to feed herself.

Few uestion though?

1.  is canned veggies ok? this was so quick and easy! Is frozen better? I know fresh is best any good suggestions of fresh veggies i can make in a short time frame for LOs just starting out with real food.

2.  How do i know if they are getting enough of a balanced meal?  I just watched thier cues.  DD wanted her bottle before DS he would have sat there all night eating that hahaha! but i ended up giving them 4 oz (each) of chicken and apples puree and they both drank about 3/4 of thier bottles.  to ensure they were full.  The LOs wont over eat will they?

3.  I feel like the LOs wont get full enough if they have to feed themselves the whole meal.  Does your LO eat thier own meal or do you end up feeling them something like a puree to ensure they get enough?

Sorry this is so long Im so excited they are doing so well wiht finger foods! I want to make sure im doing this right.

  • That is awesome!

    To answer your questions:

1- I use frozen or fresh veggies.  On busy days I will jsut stick the frozen veggies (S loves peas!) in some water in the AM.  Then they thaw over the day and by the time we have lunch or dinner I can strain a spoonful and go.  We also do zucchini raw and just small pieces since we have so much in the garden.

2- For now I think just offering a good variety of healthy food is good.  Kids tend to get picky after 1 year old so for now just offer different things.  As long as you are still feeding them BM/formula they should be good.

3- I dont give S any purees.  Now that she has teeth she does like to bite off of larger pieces of things like toast or tofu.  So with some things I cut them in strips and she tends to eat more.  I still nurse 1-2 times after dinner and before bed.  I always just remind myself that its not 1 meal that "counts" it is the day worth of food and BM (or formula).

  • I've also heard to use fresh or frozen. If you buy frozen, look for it to say "fresh" somewhere on the package so you know it was frozen fresh. IMO, that is even easier, many of the packages you just throw the package in the microwave and stam - voila, done! Even easier than if in a can!
