Re: Failed my 3 hr GD test...

  • I am on a carb-restricted diet (your OB should refer you to a nutritionist or diabetes educator that should help you with this) and I test myblood sugars four times a day.  It's not that bad.

  • I failed the 3 hour just barely but to be safe I still have to follow a GD diet.

I had to go to a Diabetes doctor and he gave me a blood sugar monitar.  I check my sugar levels when I wake up and one hour after every meal.  Fasting levels are supposed to be less then 90 and after a meal less then 120.  I pretty much eat more protein and less sugar/carbs.  When you have carbs just up your protein intake.  For breakfast I normally have a piece of cinnamon raison bread loaded with peanut butter and a greek yogurt. Or eggs and toast.  Lunch and dinner vary for me.  You will figure out what you can and cant eat...pizza is pretty much out for me so I tend to eat one slice and then pull the cheese and toppings off the next slice and just eat the toppings.  Pasta is fine as long as I put meat sauce on top.  My shock was to learn what a true serving size is...I was eating 2 servings of pasta before I started to measure it out.  Also, if you feel you overdid it in the sugar/carb area during a meal just work out for 30 mins, the exercise forces your body to turn the sugar into insulin and it lowers your number.

     I hope this helps.

  • I have no advice but I'm sorry you failed :(

Thank you. I need to get groceries today and I am researching online what to eat and what not to eat. I will be fine with the diet changes but DH eats horribly and does NOT like healthy food (fruits, veggies, whole wheat pasta, etc.) so changing the meals isn't going to be easy..

  • I just wrote a blog post about it: https://beingwhatiwanttobe.blogspot.com/2010/07/gestational-diabetes.html

I had it with DD without complications (she was 7lbs 5oz).

Basically this sums it up totally!  I freaked out at the thought of testing my blood and honestly its NOTHING!  The food restrictions are not too bad either.  Today I was craving burger king.  I was able to have a whopper and most of my small fries and still stay in my lunch limit.  I certainly dont eat like this every meal, but I dont feel punished on the diet.  It is amazing how much 20 minute walk lowers my blood sugar also.  I promise it will all be okay!

  • :( I have mine tomorrow...I do NOT have a good feeling about it. Sorry you failed...and I am going to stalk this post so I dont have to ask the same thing at the end of the week
  • Fellow Voodoo Doll here.  My sis had it too, and she tried to give me advice, but we have different health plans, so we got different information/guidelines.

I test my blood 4x a day (when I wake up and an hour after each meal).  I eat 3 meals and am supposed to also eat 3 snacks (one after each meal.)

It's not super restrictive (I just bought sugar free ice cream and can still have carbs) but, it's a bit complicated because at each meal or snack, I am told what combination of things I need to eat to keep the blood sugar level.

So far, it's not that bad, I'm never hungry (I eat more than I did before, actually, with the "balanced snacks" instead of grabbing one item,) so that's good.  The downer is having to plan ahead and make sure I am home or somewhere I can test my blood an hour after each meal.  Sadly, I skipped a party this weekend because it was a late start, over an hour away, and I didn't feel like trying to test my blood there.

Good luck to you, and if you have other ?s you can totally PM me.
