Libby was inspired by Jack...

she finally cut a tooth!  On the left, front, bottom...I felt it last night as she gnawed on my finger.  Wow!  Today is her 6 month pedi appt (even though she's 6.5 weeks old...it's because we delayed some vax at birth)...we'll see what her doc says.

Re: Libby was inspired by Jack...

  • yay libby!

Just like Teri mentioned, Jack looks like he will be getting them in batches because his second (bottom left) has also poked through.

Our ped and my dentist said to lightly brush with water (using gauze, a washcloth, or baby toothbrush, ped even said she did not recommend the dental wipes, didn't ask why since it's not something I would probably be interested in) at the first sign of teething but definitely at the first sight of teeth.  I use have been using a washcloth and he really likes it, MIL bought a banana toothbrush at the cloth diaper store so I will probably start using that too.

  • Yes, we'll washing her teeth with a wash cloth too...she's been gnawing on warm, wet ones for weeks (loves them...HATES cold ones though) and I did get some natural infant tooth paste with a finger "brush" but won't be using the toothpaste until she's older (it's organic, etc.) but figure the finger brush would be okay once her teeth have really come through.  I read a scary article in Parenting Magazine about toddlers having cavities.  Eek!  Libby still nurses overnight, so I want to be really good about keeping her teeth brushed (research says that BF babies don't hold the milk in their mouths the way bottlefed babies do and that overnight nursing isn't a huge issue...hmm...I dunno...guess each side could probably prove that they are right!)
  • I think the dentist said water rather than paste for one year (will double check since it was in one ear out the other... since Jack was probably only 3mo when I went.  My dentist works where I work so he is passionate about dental care to undeserved populations and dental care in general so he was mostly just chatting off the record since he knew I had been out on mat leave and said I should bring Jack to my next appt Smile)

...never crossed my mind to be concerned.

oh and I'm sure you do this - but I read you encourage one final drink of water after a solids meal is good practice.

  • Yay for a tooth. Hopefully she won't be doing any biting while she nurses. Believe it or not, Bella has 4 teeth and has never bit me with her teeth. She did bit/clamp down before she got any of them though.

As for brushing, our dentist (who does family dentistry) said that you should get them used to having something in their mouth and used to you brushing their teeth. He recommended against using anything until she was 2 or older. We bought her a tooth brush and brush her teeth and then we give it her and say "brush your teeth" while we brush our teeth. She LOVES it. She prefers to "brush" her own and for us not to do it but we do it anyways. Our dentist also to NEVER send her to bed with a bottle and if we give her juice to be sure that she drinks water right after. We don't do either of those. I'm against giving juice and even chocolate milk because it offers little/no nutritional value, but to each their own!

As for toddlers having cavities, we have "dental rehab" kids admitted for overnight observation. It's so a dentist can evaluate and treat multiple cavities. Most of the dentists that admit to our unit say it's because the kids have TONS of sweets and sugars (especially juices) at a very young age and are given it often. NOT GOOD!!

I am with you Sarah no juice or chocolate milk here either...I just don't see the need.  When I was a kid I LOVED juice and drank it by the gallons...I kid you not.  It was very hard for me to give up when I was adult and trying to manage my weight.  Whole fruit is definitely the way to go...even with kiddies.
