Hiking: Ergo with or without infant insert for 4 months?

I am going hiking with DH and DD in Yosemite in about a month. We have a baby bjorn already and I love it for short trips or carrying DD when she doesn't want to be in her stroller. But I know it is not enough for 2 hour hikes. I was going to get the Ergo but not sure if it will fit her, she will be 4 months and a week. They say that the infant insert is necessary until 4-6 months when LO can hold her head properly. She can hold her head mostly now, but I still use the head support in the baby bjorn. I'm worried that she will be just too big for the insert but not big enough for going without. Anyone have any recommendations?

  • I'd say get the insert, try it before you wash it, then decide.  We use it now, but DD is not even 3 mo yet.  Also probably depends on the size of your child.  Just wanted to mention we LOVE our ergo, but dd does get hot in it especially outside.

  • We have had better luck without it..
  • My little one does okay in it (he's 4 months) w/o the insert now, although depending on how his feet go in sometimes he'll have indentations / marks on them if I don't use the insert.  You can pull the fluffy bottom out of the insert and that might be a middle ground....however I think the insert makes it even hotter so prob. wouldn't use it.
  • I think it really depends on the size of your LO. Mine is super long, and she does great without the insert. It does leave some marks on her legs, but all of her carriers do (she is just a pale little girl). Go to the Ergo website and see a video on the insert and you can use a rolled blanket just like the insert.
  • Have you looked into a carrier that doesn't need an insert? I have a Pikkolo that doesn't require one and I LOVE it! The new Beco Gemini doesn't either.

  • I think you should look at the Beco as well, just so you know all of your options.  The butterfly II has an infant insert, but DD has been out of it for 2 mos now, and it has a hood if she falls asleep and looses her head control.
  • I don't use the infant insert (DS is 14w tomorrow).  However, I don't think he would be comfortable in the Ergo if I were to go hiking (I use it for short periods at home when the wrap is in the wash).  I loved the Ergo for DS1 when he was a bigger baby and toddler (10mo to 3 years).  But this little I think it might be a little big for LO to hike for long periods.  If I were you I would do some research and buy so you can practice and decide which carrier is the right fit for your smaller baby before you get too close to your trip.  GL!

I went to a store that has the Ergo and tried it on today with LO. It did not work at the moment, she cried the whole 5 minutes in it and I really didn't like that she sits so low. At the same time I don't think she will like having her legs folded inside with the insert. I am looking into the Beco gemini as PP suggested, and then perhaps trying the Ergo again in a month when LO is actually 4 months. Thanks for all the suggestions!
