Was there a DD?

I swear I responded to a post about prenatal care. . . and I am pretty certain it was on this board. . .

To the OP: if you are concerned about the level of care you are receiving, it is your right to ask questions! In fact, you should ask questions! At MTFs, they sometimes do things differently, but doctors & nurses are human and make mistakes (trust me, I know this first hand--my civilian OB or his nurse *forgot* to enter my induction information into the computer system. According to my first OB, at that point, I was 41w5d.). No two pregnancies are the same and it seems, each doctor/midwife has his/her way of doing things.

Honestly, I wish that I had questioned my OB more than I did. I think that he screwed up my care and he allowed a situation to occur where I got very, very sick. I should have asked more questions and requested closer monitoring. This is the first step in taking care of your LO! Best of luck!

I ended up with severe pre-eclampsia and HELLP Syndrome at nearly 42 weeks along. My OB was determined not to induce me until what he felt was 41 weeks--but my baby was conceived through IVF, we know exactly when "ovulation" occurred because it was a medical procedure. My first OB, who treated me before we moved, determined that my EDD was June 28th. The second OB went by my luteal phase only, which put my EDD as July 4th. I did not think six days would make such a difference, boy was I wrong. I ended up with a emergency c-section. Because LO was nearly 42 weeks, he had meconium (the baby's first poop) in his throat. He spent 12 hours in the NICU to ensure that he didn't have an infection. After the c-section, they sent me back to L&D for treatment. They said that they were going to put me on a magnesium sulfate drip for 12-24 hours to keep me from having seizures. Turns out, I was on it for 30 hours. My blod pressure was through the roof. I don't remember the bottom number, but at one point, the top number was over 200.

Sadly, this is the condensed version. . . There was more but, LO and I are happy and healthy now. Fortunately, a different OB in the practice was in L&D that night, and he took fabulous care of me. But, if I had to do it over again, I would have asked a lot more questions and pushed for more monitoring. My OB didn't order blod work on me at my last appointment--despite protein in one of my urine samples, being really swollen/puffy and high blood pressure. Had he ordered blood work, he would have seen that my platelets were off and who knows what else.

Sorry so long. . . While the hospital where I delivered has a great reputation, I learned that not all doctors are equal.

  • That is so scary! I can't imagine how you must have felt. Very happy you are both doing well now :)
  • I was in a very similiar pre-e story like you.

But I was induced too early for the military hospital I was at. My ds ended up being transferred to another hospital with a nicu as I sat at the hospital on base without my son for 3 days. I was on the mag sulfate so long my ds was "magged out" and he had dangerous levels on mag sulfate in him. Enough for an adult.  It was awful. I should have had a c section and not sit on mag for over 2 days during my induction and post induction. I was also on it onn and off again for weeks while I was on bedrest. My bp when they decided to induce me was 215/120 I think. terrible.

I am speaking up for myself for this pregnancy!!!

So sorry you dealt with all that too.

  • Sarah, my thoughts & prayers are with you! You can do it! I can't believe your son had so much mag in him! They didn't start me on the mag until after delivery--but my onset was fast and severe. . . though, in retrospect, there are big red flags that I believe my OB missed or did not act on. Grrrrrr. Best of luck to you this second time around, the odds are in your favor.
