cloth diapering

So I am thinking of going the cloth diaper route (due in October). So far all my research on this has me wanting to give it a try....way way cheaper in the long run than disposables, better for environment etc..

How many of you local moms use cloth diapers?  Any tips?

I am wondering about the econobum cloth diaper and have read good reviews on this initially but am wondering how they hold up in the long run as far as durability and sizing since it's supposed to be onesize.

Any helpful tips, recs, reviews, local cloth diaper stores etc... would be great

Re: cloth diapering

  • I tried it with my youngest about 5 months ago and I lasted about 3 weeks.  To me it was just too "gross" and much more work.  DH hated it too.  I think maybe if I had started from day 1 with it and didn't know better it would not have been so bad.  I used G diapers and one of the more "famous" all in one diapers...can't think of the name though.  If you can stick with it good for you!!

  • We've been cloth diapering since our oldest was a few weeks old & are now CDing the baby.  There is soooo much info out there, which can make it seem really intimidating.  There is a FANTASTIC store in Ann Arbor called Tree City Diapers/The Little Seedling.  Seriously amazing & they have a HUGE selection.  I highly recommend them.  As for online, check out Kellyscloset.com & cottonbabies.com.  And read, read, read!

As far as the gross factor, it doesn't really bother me.  Baby drool makes me gag, but poop doesn't, apparently!  :P  The washing process isn't that bad, either.  I swear by Rockin' Green detergent.

I've never tried the Econobums, but want to.  Max has several Flip covers & inserts, but I prefer velcro closures (although the inserts are awesome & I love using them in regular covers).  I think the most popular route to go is Bum Genius 3.0 (although now the 4.0s are out).  Those are also one size, so they "grow" w/ the baby.  Roman wore those until he outgrew them.  He now wears ones that I make but Max is wearing them now.  Be careful, though, because they say 8lb. babies can wear them & there is NO way!  Both my kids were/are chunkers & couldn't fit into them until about 12 or 13lbs.

  • I've been using cloth diapers with DD since nearly the beginning (we used up all the sposies that were gifted to us first).  The best advice I can give you is to attend one of The Little Seedling's cloth diapering classes (the schedule should be on their site) or even just go in and ask one of the lovely ladies there to give you a demo.  Originally, I went to Tree City Diapers (old location and old name) to check out baby carriers.  They ended up selling me on the cloth diapering concept which I knew nothing about at the time.  I haven't looked back since.

There's also a new cloth diapering store on Woodward, but I don't recall the exact location.  I haven't been there yet, but I would check them out if they are closer to your side of town.

I've had good luck with both Bum Genius and FuzziBunz one-sizes.  My DD is finally starting to grow out of the FuzziBunz, but I'm hoping to potty train her over Labor Day weekend.  Doing diaper laundry every other day gets a little annoying, but it just works into the routine and it's not too bad.  I can't stand the look and smell of sposies now - cloth diapers are just so much nicer!

  • I wanted to do CD but h is dead set against it.  We took a class at No Pins Required in Ferndale and it was very helpful.
  • Thanks ladies for the helpful tips, we are going to take a class at No pins required too as this is probably the closest location to us.  I have been reading and reading and am very excited about the concept but I would like to actually see and feel the diapers in person and need more info on the best deal for the $$$  I almost have hubby sold on it....at least he agreed to go to the class (fingers crossed)

Any more tips would be greatly appreciated everyone!  :)

  • I have been cloth diapering DD#2 for 8 months now and we stumbled along the way, but have loved every bit of it!!

Emily the owner of No Pins Required is great (along with her mother) and I am actually headed their after work tonight!!

I have tried several different styles and use Green Mountain Diaper Prefolds and Thristies covers during the day.  At daycare and nightime I use the Thristies Duo Diaper (a great pocket diaper)!!

One great source for newborn diapers is Nell's Natural Baby as she has a newborn rental services for $75 with a $75 store credit once you return them.  This will get your feet wet at the newborn stage without dumping money into a size that they grow out of pretty fast.

Best of luck with the class as being able to see them makes a huge difference.
