If you go by a nickname...or if your LO does...

I posted a question on another board about using Lanie as a nickname for Alaina, and whether or not monogrammed stuff should have an "A" or an "L" and which name should be included on the shower invite.  Needless to say, some of the girls weren't very nice and even questioned why I was going to call her something different from her formal name...and even suggested I change her name entirely!  Wow!  Anyway, my question is...

If you go by a nickname, or if your LO does, what name and/or initials do you use for your monogram?  In my mind, everything I get for her would say Lanie or have an "L" on it.  But, since Alaina will be her formal name (and I'm sure some people will call her that too, which is fine) I wonder if everything should have Alaina or an "A" on it. 

I'm getting really confused now and don't know what is common practice in this case.  I mean, I know I should just do whatever we (as a family) want and not worry about what other people think about it, but I don't want to do something that is totally different from what most people do and I don't want it to bother her later.  However, we are not changing her name (or nickname) so that's not an option!  LOL!  Thanks for your input ladies!

    Not sure what etiquette suggests... but I think that if you're doing a monogram, I'd use the "A" since it's more of a formal thing anyways and if I was getting something with her name on it, "Lanie" is fine.

    oh and when I did Lisa's invites for her DD "Jackie"  - I put both names like

    Jacqueline "Jackie" Irene

    So if G is doing the invites - I would say to put both... Alaina "Lanie" Middle Name (do I suck because it has slipped my mind??)  (and Last name isn't needed for the shower invite)

    I agree with Sarah...on something with her monogram use the "A", and if you are putting her name on something use Lanie since that is what ya'll will call her.  

    Huge eye roll to the board that told you why call her something different than you are naming her...because that is your paragative(yeah totally butchered that spelling) and it's no different than someone who's named John being called Jack...I'm not sure why people care so much what someone chooses to call their own child.

    Sarah put it best.  If you have anything with her name on it, I would use "Lanie" but items that have her initials I would use the "A".  Some of the other boards can get down right ugly.  I posted on the pets board about 2 or 3 years ago and got ripped a new one for my question about dog hair.

    I agree with Sarah and Candi. If it's formal do AXX (initials) if you are just using one initial I would use L.

    This is exactly what I do for anything I have monogrammed for myself.  I have some sheets that are monogrammed with the three initials and they use the E, but my wallet only has an L on it.

    Well, that's settled then!  Thanks ladies!  Not sure why I didn't ask on this board first!  So glad we are snark free here Yes

    I will use AGW as her formal monogram or just an "A" and use Lanie on some stuff too.  As for the invite, I'd love to do what Sarah suggested and put Alaina "Lanie" Grace on it and had actually thought about doing that, but there's no room to put all of that.  We are actually having trouble even just putting her name at all...and might end up leaving it off.

    I completely agree with Lydia. I would use "L" for a single initial since she will be called, monogram her whole name, or use the A when doing the 3 initial.
