Bumper Qs

We're using the breathable bumper. It worked fine until A started rolling around. Sometimes he'll roll, trying to get comfy, and then whack his head on the side of the crib... then he wakes up and cries.

Now that he can move more freely, is it "safe" to install a traditional, soft bumper? I don't understand how the breathable one is even considered a bumper, as it provides so little padding. If you use(d) one, what has been your experience with it?

Re: Bumper Qs

  • We're not using them (yet - I was actually planning on buying the breatheable ones soon), but my understanding is that the breatheable bumper isn't there so much to protect against bumps as it is to keep them from getting limbs stuck through the bars. I could be wrong though?

  • No answer here, but I'm wondering the exact same thing. I was just about to buy the breathable bumper (it's in my Amazon cart as we speak), when two nights ago, B started to roll around so much (he ended up turning 180 from where he was when I put him down!) that I started to wonder if the breathable bumper would do anything when he hits the rails since it's so thin...

  • We've never used a bumper of any kind so I'm no help! Sorry!
  • Lisa is right, the breathable bumpers are just to keep the limbs in the crib.  Not that Ashton has used his crib that much:-) but I just put on the 'real bumpers' and they are much better since he sometimes falls backwards when he is standing in his crib.  I actually really like them and now am okay that I paid so much for a bedding set.

    This makes sense.

But am I in the minority to have a child who actually rolls around and bangs himself on the wood?

He's not sticking his limbs out yet, so this thing is pretty useless right now. And maybe it should be called "netting" rather than a "bumper." Oh well, maybe I'll put some blankets behind the netting to provide more padding along the sides of the crib.

    Thanks for the input!

  • we actually have had the thick/regular bumpers in the crib since day 1.  i originally put them on just for nursery pics w/the intention to take them off after she was born...then we brought her home from the hospital and i realized she was just a lump that didn't move when she was swaddled so i left the bumper in.  then by the time she was rolling around she had great head control and i wasn't worried about her suffocating on them....so i never did take them off.  they are definitely needed now b/c she is constantly bonking her head into them getting up and down.  she also seems to like to mash her head into a corner when she is putting herself to sleep and i'm not sure she'd do that if there weren't bumpers on the crib
  • We have been using the breathable bumpers since Alexa was about 4 months and started reaching her hands through the bars... She does crawl around and pull up, but she has never banged her head on the rails, so the thinness doesn't matter much to me. Sounds like a regular bumper might work better for you tho in your case... HTH!

  • You are not alone, Ryan is always pushing back w/his feet and mashing his head up against the crib rail. I just put the bumper in last week and it's helped a lot.

You are right, the breathable bumber should be called a net! I found one at Goodwill for $1.50. I'm glad I didn't pay more for that because it looks like we won't be using it!
