Newborn Onesies - Too small?

What's the verdict on newborn-sized onesies? I got a pack of them at my shower yesterday, and opened them up. They are TINY! The package says that they are for babies from 5-8 lbs. So do these even fit "average" newborn babies? Not sure if they are worth keeping or if I should return for the 0-3 month size.

Re: Newborn Onesies - Too small?

  • i had an 8lb, 9oz baby.  the NB tees fit him but i don't know if i even tried a onesie.  i would just return them for 0-3 or even 3-6.  the 3-6 are a bit loose but he's even starting to push out of the 0-3 so far.

  • I have found the Gerber brand run small.  I prefer Carter-they are more true to size.
  • For a while my Lo wore the gerber ones in his carseat, I thought all the others were too baggy. He was 6 lbs 15 oz at birth...Fwiw he's still in Carters newborn at 6 weeks.
  • For most babies they definitely run small.  The newborn size was too small for my 7 lb daughter- I ended up getting all new 0-3 to replace them.  The Carter's do run big though- newborn was too big for her at first.  I'd get some 0-3- if you end up with a tiny baby you can always send someone to pick up the newborn size.

Edit: I should have said that the Gerber run small.

  • My ds was 8lbs 1 oz and he was in newborn size for about a week ( gerber brand).. I would switch it for 0-3 months.. I am having a girl this time and will probibly only buy 1-2 packs of newborn size just in case.. I will wash one set and keep the other in packaging in case I need to return them cause they are too small.

  • In Carter's my dd fit newborn size for a few months (maybe 3?) and it was actually a bit too large on her as a true newborn.  In Gerber she fit the newborn size for a month or so.  She was 7lb11oz and 21.5in at birth and still only 10lbs at 2 months.
  • I looked at the Gerber newborn onesies and laughed. There was no way my DD would fit in them!

DD was 9 lbs 11 oz and 20.5 inches at birth, and she's a super solid baby. She's never fit in newborn onesies. I think it's probably too late to even try the extenders now.

I find the Carters brand is good, though, and fits well. And Circo runs a bit big.

  • Gerber runs so small!  My 2 week old daughter is already too big for newborn Gerber onsies.  The Carter's newborns still fit her fine.  She was 8lb 15oz at birth.

  • DS was 8 lbs. 6 oz. at birth, so he was too big for some of the newborn onesies or grew out of them right away.

  • It definitely depends on the brand - Gerber runs small, while Carters runs big (at least that was our experience).  DD was 7 lb 8 oz at birth but was under 7 lbs when we left the hospital.  Her going home outfit from Old Navy was 0-3 months, and she was absolutely swimming in it.  We still laugh everytime we look at the pictures!  Carters NB fit her for the first couple of months.
