In my experience, we planned a homebirth and got an induction in hospital at 43+ weeks, and were able to go home 12 hours after the birth.

Re: Vag birth clicky poll
My MW did that at our home. Her services include PP care.
I was just curious because it seems to vary between hospitals and what kind of birth. My aunt's baby was premature and she stayed like 2-3 nights (as long as her insurance would cover) so she could be close to the baby. And some moms want to stay longer and some moms...like me...want to be home ASAP.

This could be complete misinformation, but I believe that there are state laws in place for the minimum amount of time that you must stay in the hospital after a delivery (typically 24 hours) in order to make sure that the hospitals are not kicking you out prematurely due to lack of staff, not enough rooms, etc. I'm not sure if this is true, but that's what I've heard.
In my case my OB gave me the option of being released about 22 hours after birth. However at that point DH and I didn't feel ready..first baby. We were scared lol. We left 48 hours after delivery.
This time though I'm gonna be ready to go, and to especially be home with my first daugther. I think we'll leave before 24 is up, assuming that baby and I are doing well.

it may be true that they can't make you leave before a certain period of time has passed, but you can always leave whenever you want.
Ditto this. Our hospital has to let you stay 48hrs for a vaginal birth and 72hrs for a c/s ... but, you can leave before that. I did.
We left less than 24 hours after giving birth, but I was in labor for about 30 hours prior to pushing him out, so it felt like we were there longer.
I wish I would have stayed one more night - we didn't have any family in town yet and once we got home I was completely overwhelmed and terrified!
With DS1, I was induced. He was born at 11:30pm, and if things would have been fine we would have left around 36 hours. But both he and I developed infections (him 10 hours after birth, me about 12 hours after that), so he was in NICU for a week and I was on the L&D floor for a week. (Although I spent 90% of my time in NICU).
DS2 was born at home. The birth team was gone about 4 hours after he was born.
I voted based on my experience with DD. She was born around 9:30 PM on Monday and we were discharged around 11 AM on Wednesday. I wouldn't have minded staying longer -- first baby, it was awfully nice to have food, a nurse, an LC, anything I needed just a button push away. But we were in a semi-private room, and another mom/baby joined us in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, and THAT was no fun. So I was more than ready to get out of there just because of that.
With DS, when I was planning a hospital birth, I had hoped to be discharged as soon as possible (likely around 24 hours after the birth), because I wanted to get DS and me home to DD. We ended up having a homebirth, and that was great.

DD stayed in hospital for 4 days total, cord complications, I could have been released in 12 hours but I stayed right with her. I still ripped horribly, that sucked sooo bad. ouch
