Anyone bring their car seat on a Westjet flight?

We are flying to Calgary for a wedding, and I am not sure if we should bring out carseat with us, or rent on when we are there.  I have been told that it is expensive to rent, but I am scared that our car seat will be thrown around and damaged once it is checked.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

  • Can you gate check it?

I didn't fly Westjet, but we took the car seat on an Air Canada flight and just checked it as one of our bags. It came out free of any visible damage and we haven't had any problems with it since. I think it's also possible to gate check it if you're not comfortable otherwise.

  • I also didn't fly Westjet, but flew from Whitehorse to Vancouver on AirNorth.

They checked the car seat as a baggage and I picked it up where the animals and fragile packages are (? can't remember the name ). It was not damaged at all and they put it into a nice clear bag so it wouldn't get dirty.

Just remember you have to haul that thing around the airport with LO and other luggage so get a couple of carts!

  • I would definitely gate check it and if possible, bring it on the plane with you. It's safest for baby and from my experience, when flying with a baby or small child they will often give you a full row of seating (if it's possible). Just because there is no visible damage, doesn't mean there is no damage! Plus, with a rented seat you never know what has happened to it!
