Parenting after a Loss

Less interested in nursing...is this normal?

Is it normal that Mallory seems less and less interested in BFing?  Even her evening nursing session that used to be the longest is down to just a couple of minutes.  You guys see my posts about how much she eats in terms of table food and I guess she just needs less from me Sad  This saddens me but also worry that she needs more.  Is ths okay?

  • Jason has been highly distracted during his nursing sessions lately too.  There are just far more interesting things in the world than our boobies...sad times.  He still does really well with his morning and bedtime nursings because  he's semi-asleep.  I've also had better luck before naps

I sure hope he doesn't get tooth decay....

    Yes and no.

Yes - as babies take more solids they will be less interested in nursing.

No - most LCs and LLL leaders believe that babies don't "self wean" before age 2.

LO probably needs at least 12 ounces of breastmilk until she starts cow's milk.

    Just keep offering...

Henry lost all interest in nursing around 8 months old, so I almost exclusively pump now. I do nurse him sometimes in the morning, but he'll only go for 3-4 minutes at most.

The pedi told me that at this age, they should still be getting 15-20 oz. of BM per day.

She never resists and gets letdown and eats.  It's just much less then even a few weeks ago.  It's not a case of distracted by things and pulling off and getting back on.  She eats with focus and then she's done and wants down. She still gets way more then 12 oz/day for sure.  I send that to daycare in bottles alone plus she nurses 2x.  On the weekend she nurses 5 times.  No worries there.  I guess I'm just sad.

Babies do get a lot more efficient at draining the boob as they get older, I think!

I understand your sadness, though. I was really sad when H lost interest, and I already look forward to BFing my next baby one day. But hey, at least she made it this far, that's great!
