DH and I are trying to work through a few things and I think we might benefit from the outside perspective a counselor might give. Not having much experience in this department, I don't even know where to start to look for someone or how to go about discretely asking for recommendations. I figured I would appeal to the wisdom of this board as a starting point...so bring on the recommendations and advice!! And if anyone has gone through counseling with your spouse and wouldn't mind sharing what worked/didn't work, that would be great too.
TIA!
Re: NBR: Finding a counselor
I can't figure out how to PM! Crud. Well at any rate- first I want to say, all relationships take work, and good for you for you & your DH for actively working on maintaining a good relationship. I really highly recommend Dr. Joe on East-West Highway in Bethesda. He's very relatable, down to earth, and helped us a lot. I was concerned at first that my pretty macho hubby wouldn't buy in to counseling, but Dr. Joe did a great job connecting with him, and I've since overheard my DH recommending his other (also macho) guy friends also try counseling for various relationship skills/maintenance
Also, he'll write your bills in a way that your insurance will pay a big part of it, which is great since it can really add up. You can find his info here: https://www.drjoejames.com/
One thing that we did that I liked was make it into a "date night" - so we'd see him after work for about an hour, then go out in bethesda and get dinner or do something. We really got a lot out of it, and no matter who you go see I hope you have a good experience too :-)
I used to see a wonderful therapist in Fairfax and have recommended her to two friends who really liked her as well. Here's her info.
Lisa Lyons, LCSW
703-395-4662 XXX Eaton Place Fairfax, VA 22030 Good for you for trying to get the support your relationship needs. We all go through ups and downs in our relationships and I think one of the keys it to make it a priority and give it the attention it needs which is exactly what you are doing. I hope you find a good therapist and that things start looking up for you.
