Talk to me about auto insurance

We are looking to switch companies since the one we have doesn't cover our new area.

We have no accidents, no tickets, no DUIs, we are over 25, own a home and we are getting yearly quotes of $2000+. WTF?

Anyone have a recommendation for a insurance company you like that has reasonable rates is not progressive?

  • Are you eligible for USAA?

We have full coverage for both DH and I and its under $40 a month

  • I had Progressive but State Farm ended up beating their rate, so we switched.

  • Another vote for USAA here.  Unfortunately not everyone is eligible for it, but if you are they have great rates.

Its an insurance/banking company for military and their families.  I can get it b/c my dad was military.  You can be eligible if your grandparents were military.

Bummer. No one in my family is Military and only DH's uncle is in the military.

we found bundling auto w/ homeowner was the cheapest way to go...

but I have splendid things to say about our local Farmer's insurance agent--he rawks.  (can't speak for the company as a hwole, only him but...he rawks enough for me to put out a plug--even though we're not w/ him because of the cheaper citizen's policy we've got elsewhere rightnow)

Yeah I wish we could bundle the homeowners with Auto right now. We have to get insurance with our MN license since we don't have CA ones yet, so therefore we have to use our MN address but make sure they cover our new area too.

    Needlessly complicated. le sigh.

  • I am with State Farm.

We have 2 vehicles (only one has collision, both liability) and the homeowners insurance through them.  We pay $78 a month right now for just the cars (I'm not sure what the house is, it's all lumped together with the mortgage) but I'm still in the 'under 25' category with them until October.  Even when I just had my brand new car (and no house, so I didn't get a discount) insured with them when I was 20, it was still only about $120 a month.

My agent is kind of a douche but I like his staff.  And I can always switch to a different agent if I want.

  • So I guess I'm no help because I'm in CA but have USAA.

  • Try The Hartford. We have our home and car insurance with them for 4yrs now. No complaints and we are happy to recommend them to everyoneSmile.
  • I agree with the pp who said it was probably your location.  I have USAA and even though they have great rates mine almost doubled when I moved to Kentucky because the area I lived in had a high rate of uninsured drivers and shiit like that.
Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."
  • USAA here too.  Are you in SF or in Marin?  I'd say the rates are probably cheaper up in Marin.
