Naming your son your maiden name?

I can't believe how many people are doing this now.  It doesn't work for all last names, of course.   Just in my circle of friends, there's been a Maxwell, a Ross, and an Elliott.  My maiden name was Thomas so it would work, but I had never thought of using it.  Have any of you noticed this trend with your friends?  What are your thoughts on it?

Re: Naming your son your maiden name?

  • I think if you have a maiden name that works, it's a wonderful way to honor your family. I have a friend who gave her maiden name to her son-- Hunter.

  • I've seen this a lot too. If you have a maiden name that works, I think it's a great idea.

However, if you have a 11 letter very Ukranian maiden name like I do...lol no way in hell.

  • I think it is kind of a neat idea. However, it would never work with my maiden name for a son or daughter.

  • I think it's a cool idea. My mom's maiden name is Graham and I really want to use that if we ever have a boy but DH doesn't like it.

  • I think it's great!

I didn't change my name when I got married - and DH didn't care.  He has a hyphenated last name because HIS mother didn't change her name.

When our LO is born, she will have my last name as her middle name, and DH's hyphenated last name as hers.  It will be quite a name...and honor both sides of the family!

  • I like the idea if it works. I don't know of anyone who named their son their maiden name, but I do know a girl named Brooke after her mom's maiden name Brooks.

It wouldn't work for me if I were having a boy. I could never name a child Johnson...that's just asking for trouble. haha

  • My uncle named his son after his mothers maiden name, Mathew. My DD's middle name is my maiden name, Ren?. I think it's great!  other usable maiden names in my family are Carson and William. If my DH wasn't so sure about his boy names we would use them.

  • I kept my "maiden" name so its not an option for us but if we have a third and its a boy we would consider my grandmothers maiden name which is Owen.

ETA: I meant to also say that my "maiden" name is a perfect girls name. In fact is a very popular middle name lately.

My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

  • I actually really like this idea. Unfortunately, my last name makes no sense as a first name.

My maiden name is also Graham and considered using it for DS, but because my parents were divorced, it might have been odd for my mom. I am regretting not using it as a middle name, though.

    This exactly.

  • I like it if it works. It doesn't even have to be an obvious first name to be used as one, but some names (like my maiden name) are just bizarro as first names. DH has his mom's maiden name as his middle name, and DS has the same MN. If we ever have another kid, they'll have my maiden name as a MN, but neither would have worked as a first name (not unless we wanted to torture our children).

ETA: I don't think it only works for boys, as the OP suggests...

  • I love it!  I wish DH would let us use my maiden name for our DS middle name...It is Elliott...however he doesn't care for my family so he is against it...I keep telling him think of it as him being named after me!
  • I like it- we may do it, too, since it would be Allen- but I woudln't do it for a last name that didn't sound like a good fit.

    Lol! That's too funny.

OP, my maiden name is our #1 boy choice- Parker.

  • I think it's wonderful.  One of my biggest pet peeves is when people name their children traditional surnames that are NOT family names.  My husband's first name (Winslow) is his grandmother's maiden name and his middle name (Everett) is his mother's maiden name, and now our daughter's middle name.  If my maiden name would work as a first name I would definitely use it.
  • My maiden name is simple and unique, just one syllable, so we're using it for a middle name if we have a boy. I think it's a nice idea to use a maiden name as a first name, but only if the name actually works as a first name (like the ones you mentioned) without sounding too "out there".
  • It would never work with my maiden name.  My married name however, used to be my favorite boy name.  Guess I can't use it now!
