2nd Trimester

Dr's appt cancelled.

So today I was supposed to have my 6 month prenatal checkup. I was walking out the door to go to the appt when I hear the phone ringing only to hear my doctor office saying my appt has been cancelled. My doctor went on vacation. I called to reschedule for an appt next week when the earliest appt is in Sept. Isnt that something? I was pissed to know I couldnt hear my baby heartbeat and not to mention I was supposed to have my diabetes test done today. What a day. Should I be mad? Would you all be mad if this happened to you all?

Re: Dr's appt cancelled.

  • Yes, I'd be incredibly angry. You're supposed to have the glucose done before 28 weeks, if I've heard correctly. But the fact that you had this appointment scheduled and your dr went on vacation instead and won't be available for almost a month is absolutely ridiculous. You should see if they have another dr you could see so you at least get your glucose test done.

  • Sorry but your doctor sounds like a douchebag to me.  Blowing off appts. to go on vacation??  I agree w/ pp, you should at least try to get in with another doctor if possible & get that glucose test done.

  • I'd be pissed and probably would look for a new doctor.
  • That's bullcrap, I'd be wicked pissed.  He doesn't have someone to cover his patients?  This is one of the reasons I switched to a practice with 6 OB-GYN's on staff.  I'd say maybe look for a new practice, but at this point that's a total pain so I don't really know what to tell you...

  • This happened to me last Friday, but I was able to get in the following Tuesday.  I'm sorry you have to wait some more.

  • I guess how pissed I would be would depend on how much I liked my doctor to begin with. ?I REALLY like my OBGYN and I have also seen his wife (a perinatologist) and I REALLY like her as well. ?Given that I would be rather annoyed but not likely to "switch" doctors as other posters have suggested. ?Have you been satisfied besides this incident? ?Also ... I am surprised that they told you it was "to go on vacation." ?Is this what they actually said to you on the phone? ?I think sometimes the front desk handles these situations poorly. ?Sometimes things come up for doctor's too ... they also have lives beyond work just like we do. ?I would be really surprised that they would cancel so last minute (when you were leaving for apt) for such a reason. If they truly cancelled it at the last minute just to "go on vacation" I would be pissed too.
  • I would be so pissed. I would also call and tell them they should schedule you in asap. Im sure they could put you in the first appointment or something right after lunch. I would give them a hard time on the phone. You didn't even cancel your appointment and they canceled it right as you were walking out the door. That is so rude!!!

  • I would be beyond mad!  I can see if they called earlier in the week or something (preferably last week or earlier), and said "we hate to do this to you, but is it possible for you to come in and do the glucose test earlier this week since the doc will be gone on Friday?"  But to wait until just before the appointment to tell you about something that was completely planned ahead of time...not cool.  And I would raise holy hell about the rescheduled appointment.  I mean, you're supposed to go in every 4 weeks if everything is progressing normally until you're farther along, when the appointments are more frequent.  So he/she thinks everything is all well and good for a whole other month?  I would threaten to send them an invoice for missing the appointment or something - do the same to them as they would to you.

If they are this cavalier with your checkups, what will happen during labor?

  • Is there only one doctor in the practice? My doctor was on vacation when I had an appointment earlier this month and I just saw one of the other doctors.

  • yah, someone dropped the ball in the office.  You should bring it up with your doc at the next apointment.  I am sure they will not be happy to hear that.
  • That is VERY unprofessional. As you are on your way out the door? I mean, things happen, of course. However, a vacation doesn't just "happen." It is typically planned well in advance and you provide coverage for your patients. My last appt. had to be rescheduled. They called me earlier in the week and said that the doctor I was scheduled with had to complete an in office surgery. No big deal. I was given plenty of notice, things happen, and I rescheduled, but a vacation??
  • I have to echo pp - this is absurd.  no one has a "surprise" month-long vacation.  Your care is important and that office doesn't seem to be respecting it.

I would call and tell them I was not comfortable with waiting another month.  If they can't get you in to see SOMEONE sooner than that, I would get a new practice.  If this is how they handle things, I wouldn't trust them to deliver my baby.
