We just moved to a new station and I know no one here, and family and friends are a 2 day drive away; what is the etiquette/ what do you usually do in regard to a baby shower? Is it okay to send people your registry and allow them to just send gifts if they would like, or is that tacky?
Re: Baby Shower
I am in exact the same boat. It looks like what we will end up doing is taking a trip back home and having a baby shower at that time. The timing is right where we will be going back home around Thanksgiving, so we kill two birds with one stone.
If we weren't going to make the trip, one other option would be (and I know this sounds weird) have a baby shower scheduled for our family and friends to attend back home. Before that date, they all send their gifts to me... wrapped, of course. Then, on the day of the shower, I open up my gifts in front of a webcam and they watch as if I were there in person. This way, they still get to get together for a brunch (or whatever) and I am able to personally thank everyone for their gifts.
