Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone making the 1 yr dentist appt?

DD only has 2 bottom teeth and was wondering if I should make that appt.

Anyone?

  • My dentist told me not to bring him until he is 2

  • Yeah we are. Grace has like 6 teeth. Our dentist said that it is mostly just to take a peak and see if there are any early problems and it is also getting them used to the chair and a little education for the hubs and I.

  • We were told 18 months.
  • Oh ok, I wasn't 100% sure if there was a specific age that is recommended, I just assumed a year.

  • our pedi and dentist said age 3 was a good time to start.

That said, DD1 has plaque build-up on the back of her 2 bottom front teeth, so I'm getting ready to make her first appt at 2.5. I think I will take DD2 starting at age 2.

Like pp said, until age 3, I've been told it's just a quick mouth check to see their teeth and let them get used to the chair and the dentist. They *might* do a quick cleaning if the child will let them, but that (and Xrays) don't usually start until age 3+.

  • If you go to a pediatric dentist like we do they usually want to see them when they get their first tooth and at or before a year.  They won't do a cleaning or x-rays, but will check their teeth to see how they are coming in, ask about diet, and make sure you know how to clean their teeth.  DD had her first appointment at 10 months, only because we are losing dental insurance in October and moving, so I wanted to make sure she saw the dentist before then.
  • No because I am a hygienist and like pp said it is mostly to look and educate the parents. I already have the education and know what to look for. We advise patients to start at 2-3 unless you see something at home. But you should be monitoring your child's teeth when brushing. Call dds if you see any buildup or discoloration. And not just dark spots, chalky white areas are beginning cavities.

  • Oh and if your water isn't fluoridated, you should see dds to discuss supplements now.

  • My dentist told me 2. But, he's not a pediatric dentist so I'll probably ask the pedi at our 12 month appt. DD is a late teether though, so I'll probably wait until at least 18 months either way.

my dentist told me not to bother until 3!

Save your cash - I don't see the point at this age, it's not like they'd cooperate! and what could possibly be wrong?!

  • Our dentist won't see the boys until they are 4. Our pedi checks them at each well child visit.
