We got the PetSafe version from Lowe's today. I set it up tonight. I'm scared to put the collar on my dog, and I think the boundary lines are totally weird. They cover a circle radius around the box, and our yard is different levels and landscaped, so part of it goes into the pushes and part doesn't even let her clear part of the yard area. EH!
Edit: I know some animal lovers don't believe in this. I'm not looking for advice on that. And I won't be leaving her outside unless I'm within a window's view of her.
Re: NTR: who has invisible fence?
I don't know how it is with the PetSafe, but with Invisible Fence, you have to do training with your dog so that she knows where the boundaries are. It starts first with putting up the little flags around the boundary. Each day for about a week, you walk her along the edge, and pull her backward when she gets close to it. At the same time her collar (which is not active yet), will start to beep. This is how she learns her boundaries. After about a week of this, you activate the collar, and let her get "corrected" once. It usually only takes once, and then she knows not to get near the flags. Over the following weeks, you slowly remove the flags, one at a time.
I wouldn't recommend putting an active collar on a dog and expect her to know where to go, and why she's being shocked without serious training. She doesn't deserve that!
Anyway, it's hard to tell if you are looking for advice, or what, but that was my experience. We installed it three years ago, and my dog hasn't worn her collar in at least a year. She knows not to leave our yard without us.
I'm just seeing who has it and how it went. I read the whole training manual and put the flags up and the collar on the "beep" setting and we did our first little test run tonight. I just hope she catches on and doesn't get zapped when we move to the active collar! Thanks for your advice!
Our beagle learned very quickly. I believe that we have the same fence as you do.
We simple had to get an invisible fence since beagles dig under real fences. It was the safest thing for him even if it means he will get a shock if he crosses his limit from time to time.
Watch out for the battery dying on the collar. We have had that happen a few times already. Even with a dead battery, he will stay in our yard.
