Parenting after a Loss

How soon did you take DC out?

The hospital ped said it would be ok to take her out just avoid people hovering over / touching her.  However my regular ped said for me to keep her in for 4-8 weeks!  Its kinda hard being a SAHM with two older girls and not being able to go anywhere.  I have had to take her to dr appts (which in my opinion is way worse than having her in the general public.  Dr's offices are so germy!)  And I need to get school supplies for them.  With breast feeding its not easy to leave her home with DH and go out!

She told me that if Hannah gets a fever she is automatically hospitalized since she was born at 37 wks...  I understand keeping her in for a few weeks but 8 weeks?  Is that really necessary?  I of course will do what it takes to keep her from getting sick.  I just never remember them telling me to keep a baby in the house for so long..

What did your ped say about taking baby out?

Re: How soon did you take DC out?

  • That does seem like a long time. DS was born in December and his pedi didn't give a time frame. I think they suggest waiting until the first round of shots, but we were out to appointments t/o the first month. I don't think I actually took him to a store, though, until he was around 1-2m old and we went out for lunch after a LC appt. when he was around that age, too. I think if you have to make a quick trip to the store, keep her in her car seat and keep the shade over her so no one will feel inclined to take a close peek or touch.

  • You know, I never even asked....

But, he was born in August and I remember taking him to Target at 2 weeks old. I would just wear him or cover him in his stroller so no one would bother him. I also think I gave off this "mother bear" vibe. I was very protective and I think people sensed that.

  • We took DS out within the first week. I would have gone crazy all cooped up.

  • We were told by the NICU 6 months of limited outings. No church (little old ladies just can't help themselves), not too many stores, only necessary trips etc. We've been pretty good. Only taking her to family events, church when we're going to someone else's for a wedding, confirmation, etc. since no one will know us there and try to touch her. If I take her to walmart I sanitize the cart handles and basket before putting her in etc. If it's something outside, we've been more lenient, since there's so much fresh air.

She's never gotten sick or had anything more than the sniffles a bit. We were told that a cold could put her back in the hospital really easily, so we've been careful, but not too strict. We've just been smart about where we go and how we handle the germ exposure.

  • M has been out since day one. We went right from the hospital to the airport to get my MIL and then out to lunch. We have been on the go ever since.

  • DS is 9 weeks old and I have only taken him to the doctor for monthly visits, and to get his pictures taken and to the mall once. I find it a hassle to take him places because he: A) starts crying in the car all the time B) gets hungry every time we go anywhere so I end up in a bedroom or fitting room feeding him and C) he gets really hot in the car seat so snapping it into the stroller is a no go

Thankfully my mom lives nearby and takes him so I can go run my errands!

  • We took her to the pedi and to my parents' on day three of her life.  I was taking walks with her by 1 week.  I kept her covered up while in the stroller and wore her in the Moby a lot so that no one could touch her.

  • Hey I just read your birth story, I have not been on here in ages! Congrats on your little girl, she's beautiful.

I took Danny out when he was 3 days old, we had to take him to the ped and then we went out to lunch. It was not a major outting but it went really well.

Thanks!  We did take her to the ped twice and to the hospital 4 times to get blood drawn (billirubin levels for jaundice).  It seems that she was at more risk at the hospital and peds office than we would be if we were out in public with her covered up!

  • Wesley was born at 37 weeks 3 days and they didn't give us any restrictions.  Maybe they didn't believe a 37 weeker could be 10 lbs. 1 oz.

Wesley was out with me and my mom to get my bridesmaids dress at 6 days.  He was passed around at my sister's wedding (with hand sanitizer) at 2 weeks 1 day.  We have been really lucky, one cold at 5 weeks and bronchitis last month and thats it.  We even managed not to get H1N1 from DH when he was 2 months old or DH's nasty strep throat 2 weeks ago. (My DH works is healthcare.)

  • We took Elise out pretty soon...anywhere outside within the first 2 weeks and we went out to eat a few times (we just asked to sit somewhere out of direct traffic).  The only thing I was a stickler on was Wal-Mart... I didnt want her somewhere that crwoded and icky right away.
  • I only waited a few days.  Susannah had track practice so I had to take her out and about.  I just made sure people weren't touching her.

  • James was out with us within that first week. He was born in September, so it was right at the start of flu season. Our pediatrician schedules healthy babies for the same time frame during the morning or afternoon so it's all healthy kids in the waiting area. Newborns get a different area.

Does your doctor realize that if you kept baby inside for 4-8 weeks you'd be bring them out right at the beginning of the school year/flu season? That seems even less healthy. Unless there is an underlying medical issue.

  • We went to Target sometime during the 2nd week.  I figured one of us was at the doctors office almost everyday when we got discharged and I took her to all my appointments so Target was no dirtier or germy then the dr office.

  • DS was born at 36w2d, and we brought him to Target at 5 days old after his first pedi appt...the pedi said it was fine.  We have brought him to 2 restaurants, a "bar" and the mall since then.

  • So far we have only taken him to the pedi twice, the elementary school my mom works at (this was before school started and only the office staff and two teachers saw him) and this past Saturday we had to take him to a beach house because I was the "wedding coordinator" for my friends wedding and after that he went to my ILs so they could watch him when we went to the rehersal dinner.

My pedi didn't say when we could take him out etc but when he was born he gave us a few handouts and on one of them it said that you basically already have taken your baby out once you left the hospital but try to avoid crowded places like malls. I'm going to be taking him out with me on Tuesday to a dinner for my birthday (he'll be 1 month old then) and we picked a restaurant that will not be crowded and where the tables are not close together...

  • My ped said that target & publix ( grocery store) were fine but keep him covered. She also advised staying out of atraction area stores ( Disney is close) .

this. We went to the nursing store and Hobby Lobby, that I remember. I had him in his carseat at the nursing store and in the Moby at Hobby Lobby. And no one touched him on either occasion.

  • We had to fly with him at 15 days old. Not ideal but it was that or a 19 hr drive while bfing. Stupid road life!

Pedi gave us the ok, although wasn't thrilled about it.
