Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What is your cut off age for having babies?

H and I have discussed this numerous times.  We want one more.  I told him I would like to wait another year while he wants to wait several.  I will be 30 in November and had always wanted to be done with having children by then. Obviously, things don't go as plan, and that is fine.  I know that we might not be able to conceive right away and I could always miscarriage again (God forbid).  Now or plan is to be done before 35, I don't want to have more kids after that.  Hopefully, it is closer to the 30 than 35.  Do you have an age goal in mind that you want to stop having kids?

Re: What is your cut off age for having babies?

  • I'll be 34 in October - we started late, waited 4 years after being married. We are  considering a second. If we do try for the second, I am hoping within the next 2 years, knowing how much more difficult and higher the risks are after 35.

  • I was 31 (almost 32) when I had Cedric, hope to be  33 (almost 34) when I have #2, and hope that I have #3 when I am 35 (almost 36).  Would never of wanted to be having kids this old, but we didn't get married until my 31st birthday.  So I hope to have all my kids by the latest 36 years old.

  • I had one until I passed it before getting married;)

I am also turning 30 and the closer I get the more I feel like I want to be done not too long after that.

We had always talked about spacing babies about 3 years apart but lately both DH and I have been re-evaluating and thinking about trying nowish.

  • I'll be 31 in December and we want one more so I'd say that I'd like to be done having kids by age 32 if all goes as planned.

  • 35. I'll be 32 at the end of this month so that gives us enough time to have one more and maaaybe a 3rd.
  • Lol I don't think I have a "done" age.  My husband might.  I am 24 and he is 30.

So we had our first before he turned 30.  I grew up in a small "hick" town and as such kinda always figured I would have been married and had a kid by 20....I was only a few years off.  I think I might like to be done by 30....we'll see.  I tend to just go with the flow so it wouldnt bother me.

  • I've always said that I want to be done having LOs at 30. If I get pg when I'm 30 & am 31 when LO is born, I'm ok with that, but we won't be trying for anymore Los after that. I just turned 28 last month so we've got time.

  • Back in the day I used to say that before 30 I wanted all my kids. I am 27 right now and Trent is proving to be a handful so at this point we are thinking that in 2 1/2 years we will have the maybe we should TTC talk. If it takes a long time to get pregnant again then our plan is to be done when I am 32.

  • My DH is saying he does not want to be too old... he is 34 and I am 31.. We are currently trying for #2 now. I did want to wait a bit but might want to have a third so..

  • My initial thought was 30.. DH is now 31 and he's always said he wants to be a young dad. He doesn't want to be 60 w/ kids in hs or college (a lot of couples around us are having kids later in life ~ 40s). We knew we wanted to be "younger" parents.

+ it's so tiring, as you all know ;) My 2.5 yo wears me out so much more then the baby! DH's cousin is almost 38 and PG w/ #3 and DH keeps saying how are they going to do this at that age, if it's so tiring for us now, imagine in another 10 years! And the cousin keeps mentioning that too...

So if we're done now, I had my last at 28 (a couple days after I turned 28). If we decide to go for #3, I'll be around 30-32 and that sounds good to me!

  • We are planning on having our next LO in 3 years, so if all goes as planned I'll be 28. This will be our last LO, so 28 is my cut off age. I don't think I'd want to have any kids past the age of 30, simply because the spacing between the kids would be too much for me. I also want to be done fairly early in life. Our kids will be moved out by the time we're 46 :)

  • 30.  But that is not set in stone.  It took us a little over 2 years to get pregnant with Lilly and we definitely want a 2nd, so if I was 31 or 32, that'd be fine as well.  But I am 27, so I am hoping that we will still be done by 30 even if it does take a little longer than we'd like.

  • I figured I'd have my first around 30-31 and be done by 35-36 (I only wanted 2 and wanted them 2.5-4 years apart). I did things sooner than I'd originally imagined, but both were planned and I had both before I was 30. I just didnt think I'd be married and settled by 25, but I was.

Don't worry, I was 34 when I got pregnant and will be 36 next month. I am clearly the old lady of the group. ;-) My absolute cutoff is 40 but we are pretty sure we are stopping after one. But I really don't think mid-30s is all that old.

  • Damn you're all babies yourselves, maybe I need to jump over to the "Parenting after 35" board!  I'll be 42 next month (I was 41 when DS was born).  DH is 53.  This is our first baby.  We conceived him right away (once we finally decided we wanted kids), no fertility drugs, and he is 100% healthy.  All my friends are in their late 30s/early 40s and having their first baby, all healthy, no problems conceiving.  Two of my friends, both age 41, just got pregnant by accident when they weren't even trying, so I think your ability to conceive has more to do with your/your husband's fertility than with age, just based on my and my friends' situations. I'm glad I waited and was able to have some fun and enjoy my freedom in my 30s.  The only hard part about having a baby when you're old is that you get hit harder by the sleepless nights, and you don't have as much physical energy to chase a mobile infant around (soon to be a toddler, yikes!)  One thing I will say is that we've decided not to have a second child, because we did kind of get lucky with our ages, and I just don't want to put my body through another pregnancy.  If I were in my late 30s we'd definately have another one.

  • I am 22 so I feel like I have all the time in the world..DH is 31 so that is part of why we are trying for #2 now rather than later, he still wants to be young when we are done having kids and also be able to enjoy each other when they are grown and out of the house! I agreed to start TTC now with the stipulation that we would have 3 kids (DH originally wanted 2). So I will probably late 20s when I'm done.

I could have written almost everything you did. Most of our friends are also "older" parents. I don't feel like my age has affected my energy in dealing w/ him or anything, but I do worry about some of the health concerns with being "advanced maternal age" and like you said feel like we got lucky w/ our ages -- my husband is 5 years older than I am, too.

  • Yeah-I was feeling old too with all of the earlier posts.  I'm 34 now and would like to have one more hopefully by the time I'm between 35 and 36.  I'm happy DH and I waited (we've been married for 6 years) and had a chance to travel and get comfortable with the idea of committing ourselves to parenthood.  Interestingly, I was the one who needed more time (than DH) to get comfortable with the idea and now I love being a mom.
  • I had DS when I was 30. I always thought I'd like to be done by 35 but I'm not ready for #2 yet, probably another year so I'll be 33. If we go for #3 then I will probably be closer to 36 when we're done. If we stop at 2 though I guess I'll be under 35 still so we'll see.

We are of the youngest of our group of friends, they are all between 35 and 45.  One of our friends has a 20 year old, 7 yr old 4 yr old, and a two year old, she is 44 years old, but you would never know it, she looks 30!  My SIL's mother is 42 (SIL is 22 and has a 6 mo).  It is funny when SIL's mom and my friend are at our house for a get together, we always joke that our friend could be a grandma.  I just want to be done in the next few years because I have had lots of fertility problems and a partial molar pregnancy in the past.  We were not supposed to get pregnant ever plus having to have c-sections...

  • I want to be done by the time I'm 30.  I'll be 26 this year, so I have plenty of time!

  • I am thinking 35 but that depends if we have a 3rd child possibly 4th child. ?If we stop at two then I will be done at 30/31.

    Exactly this.

  • I'd like to be done by 33, ideally. It took us over a year and a half to get pregnant with DS, and I haven't been on b.c., and I'm hoping for another one. I'll most likely have to IF treatments again, so we're looking into starting those late fall/early winter. I'm 31 right now.

I'd like to be no older than 50 when my last kid graduates high school.  Also, Since N was born when I was 25, I don't want huge age differences.  (And we only want two, so that would still make them 7 years apart!  Too long IMO).

  • I had my daughter at 23, and I'd like to have my last no later than 30.  I've always said 30.
  • I'm 22, was 21 when DD was born. I'm of the one and done club. When I was younger I never wanted to have kids after raising my 2 little psychotic brothers, lol. I love my DD to death but I do not want any more LO's. Unless I get a really good job and marry a really good person some day. I still wouldn't want my LO's to be more than 5 years apart so I'd probably say 26 will be my cut off date.

  • never really thought about it. dh is 10 years older than me and told me he's getting old... so #2 might be sooner than later and then we're done.
  • I hope to have the last one no later than 35 since the risks get higher.  I was 28 when DD was born and hope to have each subsequent baby when the previous one is about 2 yr old, which would put me at about 34 when we are done if we have 4, which is how many I want, but DH says 2-3...

  • I guess I don't have one since I was 44 when Princess B was born and we aren't doing anything to prevent further pregnancies.  Of course I only have one tube and it took 5 years to conceive DD so I'm not too worried about getting PG but I suppose it could happen.

it was 30 originally but i got started too late - the only reason i am done before 30 is since i knocked 2 out at once.

  • I would like to be done before I am 35. I had DS when I was 26, almost 27. DC#2 will be here when I am 28. We plan on spacing the next ones out at least 2-3 years apart (we want two more).
