1st Trimester

9 weeks and no heartbeat

Yesterday I was 9 weeks 3 days and had my first real doctor appointment.  All of my bloodwork came back fine and my exam was fine, but he couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler.  Although he assured me that was normal, he scheduled me for an ultrasound at the hospital for next week to make sure the pregnancy is viable.  I'm terrified to go for the ultrasound.  Has anyone had to go thru this as well?

Re: 9 weeks and no heartbeat

  • Is your uterus tilted? I know that for me at 10 weeks the doppler couldn't pick up the heartbeat because of that reason.

((hugs)) Best of luck to you!

  • I haven't been through this, but 9 1/2 weeks is reeeeaaaallllyyy early to hear the heartbeat on a doppler. I didn't hear my baby's heartbeat until 11 1/2 weeks, and even that is slightly early. Don't worry about it, your doctor is right, it really is normal to not hear it at this point.

  • Were they just listening for it with a doppler?  Sometimes they won't be able to get in on the doppler that early.
  • During my last pregnancy they couldn't find my daughter's heartbeat at the 20wk checkup. They ran the doppler all over the place, flipped me around, everything. I went for an ultrasound and there she was with a beating heart. She just was sitting in an odd position and the doppler couldn't pick her up.

I know it's scary, but know that an ultrasound is going to give them a much better idea of what's going on.

  • 9 weeks is still pretty early to pick up a heartbeat with a doppler. Usually you can start to hear the heartbeat regularly with a doppler between 11-12 weeks.

  • I had an appointment that week and my midwife wouldn't even try to find the heartbeat with a doppler yet. Don't worry! I think it's just early.

  • when I called my OB when I first found out I was pregnant, the first thing they scheduled with a "viability ultrasound".  I had that done at 9 weeks.  They showed me the HB, didn't try to listen to it.  I don't think you should worry, it's such a tiny thing, the heatbeat will be very difficult to pick up.
  • My doctor wouldn't even try using the doppler at my 9 week appt. She said it was too early for the doppler. I went in for an ultrasound yesterday and everything was great.

Good Luck and try not to worry.

  • At my 12 week appointment my doctor couldn't find the heartbeat with his handheld device. He did an ultrasound right there in his office (on my stomach) and saw the baby and heart beat fine. I wouldn't worry!!

  • 9.5 weeks is really early to fnd a h/b w/ doppler.  Most doctors won't even try until 10-12 weeks.  My OB alsways tells me that it is normal not to hear it as early as 10 weeks, and warns me not to freak out.

  • When I had my DD the doctor wouldn't try to listen to the heartbeat via doppler at my 10 week appt because he said he didn't want me to panic.  They tried at my next appt at about 13 weeks and found it.

The Dr. shouldn't have tried this early...try not to worry.

  • they couldn't find DS heartbeat with doppler until 17 weeks.  doppler kinda sucks sometimes.  *hugs*  i hope the u/s will show good news!
  • My dr could barely find the hb at my 12 week appointmen. It took her 10 minutes and a stronger doppler. 9 weeks is very early to hear the hb on a doppler, try not to worry!

  • Like everyone said...9 weeks is still early to hear a heartbeat on the doppler. My OB tried at 9 weeks and we didn't hear anything and then he did an u/s and we saw a strong heartbeat.

Also when I was pregnant with DD, I had an appt at 12w6d and still couldn't pick up a hb on the doppler. I wasn't worried because I had just had an u/s done for my NT scan 5 mins prior and knew the hb was 150bpm. Hope that brings you some piece of mind.

  • With DS my doctor couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler at 10 weeks.  She sent us for an u/s and everything was fine.  9 weeks is actually pretty early to pick up on the doppler.
  • My doc said this is normal too. At my last Dr. appt I was about 8-9 weeks and they couldn't hear it on the doppler. But I knew it was fine because I had an u/s before that at 7 weeks and baby had a nice strong heart beat and I had another u/s this week at 10 weeks 4 days and it was still good and strong. The doppler is not as sensitive as an u/s. I hope your u/s goes well and you see that lovely little flicker! Until then, I know it will be hard to relax, but do your best.

  • I had my first Dr. appt on Tuesday and he was unable to find the heartbeat with the doppler.  He said my uterus was tilted, so they did an ultrasound and there it was nice and strong.

  • That is not surprising because 9 weeks is really too early to hear. Majority of ladies will not hear it that early. I'm surprised they didn't just do an ultrasound. I got my ultrasound last week at my appt and my dr will try the doppler at my next visit at 13 weeks.

Please don't stress, you will most probably see a baby dancing around at the ultrasound.

  • I just posted for someone else, but my OB's office won't even use the doppler until you are at least 11 weeks and even then, its too early most of the time.

With DS1, we did not hear the h/b on the doppler until I was close to 15w!

With DS2, we tried at 12w3d and could not hear it. My next appointment was around 15w and we heard it then.

I am SO sorry they are making you wait for an u/s. I could never go to an office like that. My office gives you an immediate u/s any time they can't hear the h/b with the doppler.......and everyone gets u/s's at every appointment until they can hear the h/b with the doppler.

    GL!

  • 9 weeks is too early to hear with a doppler.  Normal period to hear a heart beat is from 11-13 weeks with providers often finding the heart beat at 10.
  • My doc couldnt find the hb at 13w6d and I had an u/s and the babe was totally fine! 9/10 weeks is WAYYYYY too early to be concerned about not hearing it on the doppler.

  • With DS the OB couldn't find the heartbeat at nearly 12 weeks, so they sent me in for an U/S right away and everything was fine.  9 weeks is WAYYYY early to hear the HB on a doppler.  I'm sure everything is fine!

  • I go in for my next appt. just at 9 weeks. The Dr said we'll try to find it on the doppler, but he told me it's very iffy that early & it still might just be way too early to hear it. I'd try not to worry...
  • I went in for u/s today and all was well!  I heard the heartbeat and saw the little guy dancing around.  Thank you everyone for the replies, made me rest easy for a few days :)
  • I had an L&D nurse unable to find the HB on a doppler for several minutes, and I was 22 weeks at the time.  I wasn't worried because I could feel him moving, but she was freaking out!  It can be very difficult to find, and I'm surprised they tried this early.  Can you call and see if you can get the u/s in the office or earlier at the hospital to give you some peace of mind?  I think your doc made a mistake by trying and then scheduling you for a week away.
