Another conv carseat question

So most the weight on these carseats goes anywhere from 40lbs to 75 (ff).  At what age, though, do you think your kid will "outgrow" a carseat and go to a booster?  I just can't see telling my 6 year old (at 75lbs) to crawl in a carseat vs a booster.

But I'm basing this on my step-brother.  At 8 years old he would have fit in one of those 75lb carseats, but I would have needed a tranquilizer to get him in there.

((ps, I'm not even sure what the new law states.  I figure by the time Coops that old it will have changed 10 times))

Re: Another conv carseat question

  • My DS will be in a carseat until he cannot fit into one safely anymore.  He will probably be at least 7.  It is the safest way to ride.  I *think* the law is 4 years and 40 pounds and 42 inches before you can move to a booster, but I could be wrong about that.

  • My niece and cousin are both about to turn 5 and have been in boosters for a couple of months now.

  • 4yo and 40lb is the minimum recommendation for a booster, but I do not think it's law in Texas. But unless you reach the minimum height, you have to be in a booster until 8yo per the new law.

I bet your step brother would have been too tall for the carseat before 8. Most kids outgrow carseats by height, so only a very hefty child will reach the weight limit first... but there have to be carseats with higher weight limits so husky kids can be safe too.

My BFF's 4yo twins are 48lbs, very tall for their age and wear size 6 clothes. She just moved them to graco nautilis seats from regular convertible seats. She chose not to move them to boosters because they are not mature enough to sit in a belt-positioning booster correctly. They would get out of the seatbelts if they could. Until they can be trusted to keep their seatbelt on, they have to be in a 5pt harness.

Seeing as how E is still RFing and has no problems with that and isn't near the weight limit, she might still be RFing at 4.... So I think she'll definitely still be in a carseat at 5, not sure after that.

  • We moved K to a 5 point harness/booster seat a few months ago. It is 5ph from 20-40lbs and then seatbelt positioner from 30-100 lbs. She will stay in the harness until 40lbs then I will start with the seatbelt.

  • We "promoted" Sarah to a 5-point harness booster this summer.  She's super tall (95%) and weighs 43 pounds.  Her booster is made by Britax and is called the Frontier.  It looks and feels to be as sturdy as her Roundabout - just larger and it sits flat on top of the seat.

  • It's a new world :) My teenager was out of a carseat and did not even use a booster by the time she was 5. She's now 17 (for time frame)

For little DD I skipped the convertible completely and went from infant seat (safeseat) to the Recaro Young Sport when she turned one. It's FF only but I was ready to turn her. It's nice and low and uses 5pt harness to 40 lbs converting to highback booster to 80lbs.

  • A went from a forward facing car seat to a booster at 4 years old. She never did meet the weight requirements for seats, always outgrew them by height.  She's always used the boosters with the seatbelt.  Now we just use the bottom part of the booster seat - we took the back off of it.  She's 4 ft tall, about 50 pounds and will be 6 next month.
