Cereal? What are you doing?

My ped mentioned that if my supplies drops now that i am working again we can start cereal early- LO is 3.5 months.  I honestly dont want to start it at all, and so far knock on wood my supply is just fine.  what are you doing about cereal? when? what brand.. I have been looking around fairway and saw several organic options but a few i have never heard of, HappyBellies? just looking for some thoughts and insight! thx!

Re: Cereal? What are you doing?

  • We didn't do any for DD and won't for DS.  He'll eat puffs once he's doing better but hopefully will graduate to cheerios quickly like DD.

  • We didn't start cereal until around 5 months.  We mixed it with breastmilk and she ate that once or sometimes twice a day for a week or 2.  Then we started veggies.  The pedi told us it's important for their development because they need the iron.  After she started solids, I often used the cereal to thicken up home made baby food and she got it in that way.

  • We didn't start any food till 6 months & we skipped cereal. My DCP gave it to her a bit for breakfast mixed w/ fruit puree once she started there around 8-9 months & we bought her Earth's Best Whole Grain or something for there. That is all I know about it though... I just got organic and whole grain because that is what I eat for bread. LOL

I wouldn't start cereal early or at 4 months, even but that is just me. I don't plan to do it at all when we have another because hopefully I'll be a SAHM.

  • My pedi said it was fine to skip rice cereal.  We just made sure he got a lot of iron rich veggies when he started eating solids around 5 + months.  He never had any iron level issues that we are aware of.

  • We started at 5 months.  We used Earth's Best.  FWIW, we tried at 4 months because my parents would. Not. Shut. Up. about it.  and DD DEFINITELY was not ready.  Poor thing had indigestion for two days.

this is us.. my family and friends are all asking and i feel like telling them to shove it.. i have even hear remarks like-- well just because you are a vegetarian you are not going to starve LO by making him eat just fruit and nuts like that family on tv... ( a while ago there was a new story about a vegan couple charged with child abuse, and since I have certain opinions on food my family does not agree ewith, they think it's ok to make remarks like that :(.. )
  • We didn't start solids until a week before DD was 6 months.  We also skipped cereals/grains.  DD's first foods were avocado and bananas.  We BLW'd.

  • I started BeechNut rice cereal with DS at 4 months. He must have really needed it because he started sleeping longer stretches at night instead of having to nurse a bajillion times like usual...and I had a great supply!

  • We give a little bit of Earth's Best Oatmeal mixed with fruit or veggies. I would say only about a tablespoon or so a day. We didn't give any solids until 6 months. My LO still likes pretty smooth purees.

  • we started solids at 6 mo (tried it at 5 and he was not ready). DS never liked rice cereal, baby oatmeal, or barley cereal. He wasn't even into purees. So he ended up waiting until more like 7 mos when we started on puffs and cubed cooked sweet potatoes. Once he could feed himself, it was a whole different ball game.

  • We started cereal at 5 months. He didn't get it every day though. We mixed only a tiny bit in BM and spoon fed him to get used to the spoon. I go days where my supply is really low when I am at work. So I have MIL or SIL mix some cereal with water or BM. We make it thicker now that he is older and is used to the taste. He devors and loves it. We get the Earth's Best Organic kind. We will start him on avocado maybe next month when he is over 6 months. He always seems satisfied so I am in no rush.

We also skipped traditional baby cereal. After 6 months we just offered iron rich veggies as well as egg yolk and chicken (we're doing BLW for the most part). Quinoa has more iron than other grains and is more easily digested so you can make your own "baby cereal". Recipe here.
