Pregnant with a negative pregnancy test??

Hi all!  Just was curious if any of you were pregnant but had a negative pregnancy test.  My DH and I are TTC and I thought for sure we were pregnant this time but it's day 40 of my 42-45 day cycle and I tested negative. Sad  Please let me know if this has happened to any of you!  Thanks!

Re: Pregnant with a negative pregnancy test??

  • Hi, Did not happen to me but it did happen to my sister and my uncle who is a doctor said it is possible to get a false negative. Dunno if this helps GL

  • I had negative test with one of my kids until I was 1 week late and I have ovulated late.

  • There's a girl I work with who never got a positive test through her entire pregnancy... something with her hormones. Once she missed two periods, she went to the dr and they had to do an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. It was weird.
  • I didn't get a + HPT until 17 DPO.  I was charting, so I know how late it was.  All the tests before that were negative.  On the other hand, I didn't "know" I was pregnant or anything.  I had no symptoms.

  • Try testing again in several days or after your period is late by a couple of days.  Best of luck!

  • I got 8 negative tests starting the day I was supposed to start my period.  I called doc to get blood test after the 12th day past my period.  Blood test was positive so I took a pee stick test that day just to see if it would FINALLY show and it did but was very faint.  Call your doc if you don't get your period and it's been almost two weeks past your cycle start.
  • Yup! I hadn't been feeling great a few weeks ago and took a test. Came up negative. Even went to the Dr. and they said, oh it's just a bug. Found out this week I'm TEN WEEKS along. Surprise! So yes, I had a negative and went on with my life only to find out I am indeed preggers.
  • Yep! But I was stupid and tested WAY too early... (read: I ovulated late and didn't know because I didn't chart until way late in my cycle)

  • I started testing 10 days after ovulation.  Kept getting negatives until 14 days and when I finally got a line it was very faint.  Tested for 3 more days until I got a strong positive.  Learned from the experience as impatient as I am it sometimes is better to just wait until your missed AF.  If you do a google search there are sights that will tell you the sensitivity of different tests and if the hormone level isn't strong enough for the test you are using you will get a negative even if it is positive.  Good luck!
  • I had a negative pregnancy test after I was a couple days late.  Waited almost two weeks and took another and it was positive.  I took three more to make sure and they were also positive.  I think the tests could be defective sometimes.

  • Hi! Generally you ovulate 14ish days before you are supposed to get your period. If your cycle was 42 days this time, and you are on day 40, you probably ovulated 12ish days ago. I think that 12dpo is a reasonable time to expect a positive hpt if you are indeed pregnant especially if you are testing with an early pregnancy (extra sensitive) test. But some people don't get a positive test until at least 14dpo so you would still have a chance. If, on the other hand, if your cycle was 45 days this time and you are on day 40, you probably only ovulated 9ish days ago and 9dpo would be really early for a positive test. So you'd still have a good chance.

To answer your original question, yes, I tested negative before I tested positive. My cycles are very irregular and I tested 2 weeks ago (31 days after my last period) and got a BFN. I tested 1 week ago (38 days after my last period) and got a BFP. But given your long cycles, you may still be in your 2ww, so hang in there! And good luck!

Wrong. This is a common myth. Please do some research on your reproductive system before doling out false advice.

Your luteal phase can vary from 8 days to 18 days.  If you ovulate late (due to stress, illness, etc.) it throws your entire cycle off and can give the perception of your period being late when it's not.

  • I tested positive with both pregnancies at 15dpo.  With my first I thought we were out and this time I knew I was pg, but  kept testing negative.

It is extremely rare to get a true false negative. If you do get pregnant this cycle, it's not that the tests were wrong, it was that you were testing too early. So, if your cycle ends up being on the longer side of what's typical for you (45 days), you're testing way too early.

There's a lot of phantom symptoms women get when they really want to be pregnant, but if you're still getting negatives, you're not pregnant.

  • Why did you think that you were for sure pregnant this cycle? Do you know when you ovulated?

I would just wait too see if AF shows up. If not, test again. If it is negative and AF is a little late give it some more time because stressing out over being possibly PG can throw your body off causes AF to show up later (our bodies are cruel like that).

Actually, everything I said is exactly right. Most women have a luteal phase (time from ovulation to period, if you were to get one) of 12-14 days. Notice I say *most* just as I said *generally* in my original reply. It is very rare to have a luteal phase shorter than 12 days and very, very rare to have a luteal phase longer than 14 days. Further, a woman's luteal phase itself stays constant throughout her life. Yes, stress, illness, etc. can throw off your entire cycle and make you ovulate late (thus it can affect your follicular phase), but it would not affect your luteal phase. So whenever you ovulate--even if you ovulate late one cycle, there is still *generally* 14ish days between ovulation and period. Everything I said in my previous reply reflects this *fact*.

So do some research on your reproductive system before you go throwing around criticism.

Unfortunately, having a short luteal phase is not that rare. Nor is having a longer one.

Common enough that your advice may make a woman completely miss her fertile period.

  • It is rare. Of course it is not rare enough, as it is one of the most common causes of fertility difficulties. And that is unfortunate.

Anyway, I wasn't giving anyone any advice. Just providing the poster with some accurate information about what's generally the case, letting her know that it's not necessarily too late to get a BFP, and wishing her luck in her TTC journey.  I think that we all recognize that our own case can differ from the norm--as mine does, given that I sometimes have 50+ day cycles, believe me, I've researched the reproductive system.

Many women have outlying LPs. In fact, most drs don't even consider an LP short unless it is shorter than 10 days. That is how common not having a 12-14 day LP is. I may be leaping my logic here, but I suspect your answers are based off of TCOYF.  If so, know that book--wonderful as it is--is totally outdated on LP theories.

As to the "whole life" comment, you are incorrect here as well. As the amount of eggs a woman has diminished, her body will signal hormones differently and each month may be different. My LP varies up to a week. Over three years of charting I watched as it got wackier and wackier. This most likely ties to diminished ovarian reserve (shockingly early, as I am only 30).  My cycle is almost always the same length, but LP bounces from 8-14 days and on rare months even hits outliers on either side. I fired the out-of-date doctors who fed me the "every woman" line. Had I listened to them I would still be waiting for a BFP or for a PG to stick.

Your answers may apply to the average woman, but since the PP has an not-average cycle length to applying "average" advice seems totally off-base.

  • Thanks for (most of) the advice everyone.  I'm pretty familiar with a woman's, and my own, reproductive system as I am a maternal/child nurse so I have no questions or anything as far as that is concerned.  My biggest question was whether or not false negatives are common.  Reading what most of you wrote has given me some hope.  I'm on day 43 but still have not gotten a period.  I'm going to wait until day 45 and then test again if still nothing.

To answer one of the poster's questions, I thought for sure I was pregnant because I have been getting symptoms that I normally don't get with my period.  Cramping, no appetite. discharge, etc.  Sorry, TMI!  So I guess I will just wait a couple more days and see.  Thank you all again so much for sharing your stories!
