TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Ever had blood drawn by someone whose IQ is questionable at best?

Have to go have my thyroid levels rechecked so I went to the lab this morning. First of all, why the hell do they insist on setting the AC at phlebotomy labs to 50 degrees? Like my veins need more reason to retreat? Anyway, convo went something like this:

Nurse: So what do you do for a living?

Colinda: I'm a Spanish interpreter.

N: Oh, wow, so you must speak Spanish!

C: Indifferent

N: Hmm, I'm having trouble finding your veins. Have you had any water this morning?

C: Yep, a 16 oz glass when I woke up. My veins are a little hard to find anyway, and it doesn't help that it's freezing cold in here.

N: Oh, yeah, you're probably right, it probably doesn't help that it's so cold in here.

C: Indifferent

N: I'm gonna try a double tourniquet, see if that helps. Hmm, yeah, I think maybe I'll try this one, I can kinda feel it.

C: Indifferent

N: [pulls out, no _shit, like a 16 gauge needle]

C: Indifferent [mentally prepares for this hole punch to be inserted multiple times]

N: [proceeds to not slide it in, but to STAB my arm] Oh good, I got it! Phew, I didn't know if I was gonna. I couldn't really feel that vein.

C: Indifferent :::Wondering how long this freaking hematoma you just gave me will last...:::

"No actually, I don't speak.  I interpret for Spanish mimes."

OMG. ::dead:: This is my new line. It's amazing how many people respond to "I'm a Spanish interpreter" with "You must speak Spanish."

  • When I read your headline I immediately thought of that one Will & Grace episode where Grace was subjected to the Valley-Girl-speaking phlebotomist who was doing her first solo blood draw on G. I've had some I've wondered about, but none quite as bad as you described!

  • Oh jeez, hope she didn't leave too much of a mark.  I gotta say that I use to hate how the temp was always so cold in those places....until I passed out one time.  Then it actually felt pretty good since passing out comes with that feeling of being really hot.

  • I have submarine veins too. Anyone comes near me with a needle, and they yell "Dive! Dive!"

That really sucks ColindaP... I'm sorry you got shanked by an idiot.
