1st Trimester

plus sized mom to be

Hey girls, I'm about a size 22 prepregnancy, and I am about 10w3d and I'm just kind of curious as to when I should expect to start showing...

I'm diabetic (II) with an insulin pump prior to conception...my gluc levels have been awesome...and I've not been sick and have actually lost 5#.

I have the classic B belly now and don't really notice any changes...my hubby is super happy that my boobs have gotten huge, though!

 any insight would be super!

Re: plus sized mom to be

  • I was (and still am) a size 16 last time... I didn't really "show" until after 20w.

I got my first stranger comment at around 27w.

But then again, some people at work didn't realize that I was even pregnant when I was leaving on my last day before mat. leave at 35w pg.   I really sorta looked like I had just gained some weight depending on what I wore.

Bonus... 1 week after baby I was 13 pounds lighter than when I got pg thanks to the GD diet.

  • Showing with DS,,,, didn't happen untill i was 8 months pregnant.  After 8 months i started to pop.  When i had DS i wasn't that big, i just looked fatter.  I didn't gain alot and DS weight 10lbs 11 oz.  I didnt have any issues with GD either.  He was just big.

PS i always wanted baby belly and didn't have one that long.  I was kinda sad.  In the end i was glad i didn't have to carry all that weight around.

I've heard with a high BMI, you should really barely gain any weight.  The article above says an obese woman may only gain about 11 pounds.  Based on this, I would guess you would barely show or show very late.

I only gained 13 total.  (and lost 26 by 1 week pp).   But I don't consider myself obese just yet.

  • With my first pregnancy I was a size 16 when I got pg and I didn't really look pregnant until about 25 weeks to strangers.
  • I was a size 18 and started showing at about 25 weeks.  Total net gain was only 1 lb.  Lost a bunch in the 1st and 2nd tri.

  • Prinycesa07 did you have morning sickness?

  • I did, for about 3 weeks, probably from 8-11 weeks.  I also cut out 90% of soda, i use to drink at least 2 cups a day, and replaced it with water (which i never drank).  I think this was a big reason for my weight loss.

  • Size 22 here too, and you're exactly a week ahead of me. :)

With my son, I just looked as if I gained a little weight. With my daughter, however, I rounded out and looked pregnant (I rounded out A LOT). This happened around 18 weeks or so.

This baby is different tho, no m/s, but def. starting to round out a bit (I'm at 9w 3d). My family doctor said that it's normal to start rounding out more quickly with subsequent pregnancies tho (only .85 of a lb gained tho, woo).

It just depends on how you carry your weight. I carry my weight in my bottom (pear shaped), and the above is what I experienced. As for the boobs, I'm hoping mine don't get any bigger. I started at a 36 C, and after 2 pregnancies, I'm at a 46 DDD. If they get any bigger I dunno what I'll do!

    Good luck to you!

I am also a diabetic on the pump(type 1) and am a size 16 pre-pregnancy.I didn't start noticeably showing until 27-27.5 weeks.I still have not gotten a stranger comment, but I(and DH,family and friends) think I look obviously pregnant.I am also tall (5'8") with a really long torso.I think if you are taller it takes longer because there is more room for the baby to hide.

I was about an 18-20 pp, started really showing at about 18 weeks. I'm 40 weeks, 4 days and I've gained about 50 lbs. I don't have diabetes or anything, but I've had a lot of water retention and swelling. Try to exercise (walk, swim, dance, etc) as long as you can/are allowed to. Drink lots of water, eat healthy and that can all help to keep your weight down.

Even if you gain more or less than the "suggested amount", staying active can help you feel better. Your body will gain what it needs for the baby. As long as your doctor is monitoring your progress and diabetes, you should be alright.

    Good luck with everything!

  • I'm a size 18 pre-pregnancy.  With DS, I started to show at about 20 weeks, as in no more B belly.  This photo was taken when I was about 25 weeks along.  Definitely looking pregnant, both in profile and from straight on.
