For those of you who have made moves to new areas Stateside, how do you make friends locally? I'm struggling with this, as I just had a baby 6/29, and also have a 22 month old, so it's hard for me to get out and go do stuff.
We moved here in March and I have been struggling with the same. I joined a mom's group so we get out to playdates and stroller walks but I haven't made any real friends yet.
We're a Reserve family so we don't move but why not sign your toddler up for a class that the parents can stay for but don't necessarily have to participate with the toddlers during the class. This may give you some time to chat up other parents who may be there.

Go to playgrounds, and even mall play areas, and let your toddler play while you sit with the baby, and try to chat up the other moms that are there. Try and find a mom's group or playdates to join. Sign your toddler up for classes if you can find someone to watch the baby for a few hours a week (and hourly care on base is great for this, assuming your base has this option).
One of the places I found a lot of friends was our FRG meetings. I met my now best friend at one a few years ago, we slowly got to know each other through group outings, and now we are inseparable. Most of my friends here are other wives in DH's troop that I met at FRG meetings or other troop functions.
Check out the groups at MeetUp.com. There seems to be one for everything including military wives and also moms looking for playdate buddies for their kids. I've met a lot of great people that way.
I joined a mommy group (MOPS) here on base and I strike up conversations at med group or in the commissary. I've met quite a few friends that way. It took awhile though. It didn't happen immediately.
I was gonna say we don't have kids yet, and I have a hard time because I feel like I have nothing in common with the other wives who do have kids. The three friends I have made are the women I work with every day.
