Our baby girl's name...

DH and I decided to keep the name we've chosen for our baby girl a secret until at least the baby shower, if not until her delivery.  We want it to be a surprise and we're also not too anxious to hear all of our family and friends' opinions (a lot of them like really traditional names).  I also like that only DH and I know - I think it's sweet.  Anyway, you gals are the exception because, let's face it - we're not very good at keeping anything from each other ;)  So, here goes:

Kenadie Lee Christie

Christie is our last name.  We like how our last name is a first name and her first name is a last name.  Lee is my grandmother's, auntie's, and my middle name.  We had such a long list of names that we were milling over and one day on the drive home DH said, "What about Kenadie?" and we both knew immediately that it was perfect.  We're still debating the spelling.  Kennedy is still on the table.  So, what do you all think?

Re: Our baby girl's name...

  • Although it's nms and I would definitely go for the more common spelling, I like it. I think it sounds nice together. :)

  • I like it, but I also would go for the more common spelling.  It's tough on kids to explain to teachers pronunciation, etc!

  • I think the name is really cute.  I like the name Kennedy, but I would spell it the traditional way.  I'm not a fan of funky spellings.  I want people to be able to easily spell LO's name.

  • KENNEdy was on our list but we didn't go with it hubby didn't like Kennedy Johnson lol even if it would be 2 presidents in order of their presidency lol.

I don't have a preference of traditional or the way you have it spelled

  • I agree with the others...the name sounds nice but I prefer the original spelling.

  • I have to agree with the other ladies, the more common spelling is nicer.  The other one looks like you were trying to make the name more unique, which I think it already is.

Side note, I knew a girl who's first and last name were both first names and I always thought it sounded so pretty:)

  • Love the name you picked out.  I am not too big of a fan of the spelling, but I do like some alternative spellings for names.  I think it is the 'a' that I have an issue with.  My niece's name is Kenidee, and I think that is adorable.  Congrats on the name though!  Very cute!

  • Add me to the bulk of replies... I LOVE the way it sounds, but I prefer the traditional spelling.  In part because I'm an English teacher and research has shown that kids with non-traditional spellings for their names struggle with, well, spelling.
  • Cute name, but I definitely think traditional spelling.  My name is spelled atypically, and it's always been hugely annoying for me to have to spell.
  • I like it a lot more spelled Kennedy.

  • Love the name but I am in agreeance with everyone else. If someone has to ask how to spell it everytime someone new goes to write it, it will become a hassle and a pain for your little girl. It sounds lovely how it is and I love hwo it has family tradition in the middle name and how it goes with your surname.
  • Thanks everyone for your input!  Here are the reasons that we're leaning toward the unusual spelling:

    1.  If we ever have a boy we're going to name him Jack.  JFK was also known as Jack Kennedy so we don't want people to think that we were trying to spell out a president's name with our kids' names.

    2.  My first name is Katie.  She'd have my same initials and her name would be more similar to mine if spelled Kenadie.

    3.  We really like the nickname Keni (especially DH - he already talks to my belly and calls her Keni).  If her name is spelled Kennedy, then it will be more likely that, if she chooses to go by her nickname, it will be spelled Kenny, which we don't like.

    4.  DH likes the unusual spelling because he thinks it makes the name look more feminine.

    5.  It's more likely if her name is spelled like the last name Kennedy that people will mix up her names and call her Christie Kennedy.

I don't not like the spelling Kennedy, but I just keep thinking of reasons to do it differently.  Do these reasons sound stupid?

  • Kennedy looks better.  I think Kenadie looks too much like a pregnant teen trying to pick out a ridiculous name for her baby, IMO.
  • Here are my thoughts on the various reasons you said you prefer the spelling Kenadie to Kennedy.

    1.  If we ever have a boy we're going to name him Jack.  JFK was also known as Jack Kennedy so we don't want people to think that we were trying to spell out a president's name with our kids' names.

If I met someone with a son named Jack and a daughter named Kenadie, I would definitely think of JFK regardless of whether it was spelled Kenadie or Kennedy.

    2.  My first name is Katie.  She'd have my same initials and her name would be more similar to mine if spelled Kenadie.

She'll have the same initials anyway and it wouldn't matter to me whether my daughter's name was more similar to mine.

    3.  We really like the nickname Keni (especially DH - he already talks to my belly and calls her Keni).  If her name is spelled Kennedy, then it will be more likely that, if she chooses to go by her nickname, it will be spelled Kenny, which we don't like.

She can spell her nickname however she wants.  I think it is fine to use Keni with the spelling Kennedy.

    4.  DH likes the unusual spelling because he thinks it makes the name look more feminine.

I think the unusual spelling just looks unusual.  And made up.  Not necessarily feminine.

    5.  It's more likely if her name is spelled like the last name Kennedy that people will mix up her names and call her Christie Kennedy.

This is the only reason that I can actually sort of agree with.  But I think the names will be mixed up even with the spelling Kennedy, so maybe this would be a reason to choose a name that sounds less like a last name.

I don't not like the spelling Kennedy, but I just keep thinking of reasons to do it differently.  Do these reasons sound stupid?

As you can probably tell, I much prefer the spelling Kennedy to Kenadie because I think Kenadie is too kree8tiv for me and I think she will forever be correcting people.  But I'm also not a huge fan of last names as first names.  If you like the name Kennedy though, I would go with the more traditional spelling.

I don't think your reasons sound stupid, but I agree with *justducky*, and was all set to type a similar response. I'd like to add that even though you like the unusual spelling because it ends like your name, I see the word 'die' everytime I read it. It's another reason why I like the traditional spelling better.
