3rd Trimester

Does anyone know if Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket have a NICU?

Our anniversary is next week and H was thinking of going to one of those places for a few nights. I am not super thrilled about going to an island where there is no NICU. I looked on both of the island hospital websites but didn't see anything about it. I know they could med-flight to Boston but I'm not sure that's a position I want to put myself or LO in. I'm sure everything would be fine but I would rather be safe than sorry. Anyone know?

  • I am fairly positive that they do not. I think that you would have to Med Flight.

  • i don't know...

are you high risk or anything? having any complications? any reason to think something would happen?

honestly- i'd go without worries! and have fun!

i wish the hubs would think to take me to MV or Nantucket!

  • I've never been in the Nantucket Hospital, but as for the MV...I highly doubt it.  That place is like walking into the Twilight Zone of hospitals.  It would be the last place I'd want to have stitches, let alone deliver a baby.

No, but I know I'd never forgive myself if something did happen.

  • I need to add, you're only 25 weeks..you'll be fine!  We just went to the Cape and will be going back at the end of the month.  You can't worry about that now.  Just enjoy your trip!

Good to know! Maybe we'll save that for another trip! :)

  • None on the islands. Hyannis (where you can take a ferry to/from the islands) has a level 1 at Cape Cod Hospital. If you're looking for level 3 then you have to leave the cape. If you are seen by a dr. before the trip and everything is ok, then I would say go and enjoy yourself. I would love to hit the cape right now.
  • Pretty much anything not Boston would mean a med flight to Boston...it's not far...at all.  I have a friend who lives on Cape (not MV or Nantucket) and she delivered at 33 weeks due to Pre-E and they just took her straight to MGH in Boston.

I agree...GO AND HAVE FUN!  It's secluded and beautiful, but if you ever needed medical attention it's very very close.

At 25 weeks - THIS.  No worries, if you are ok to fly you are fine to go to MV or Nantucket!  (It's not like they are some obscure exotic places without running water!)  Enjoy the time with your DH!!!

LOL Yeah, it has occurred to me that I am being a big over-dramatic. :) I was just looking at hotels!

  • I'm 99% sure the islands only have a community hospital setting, no NICU.  However, you could get a medflight if needed to MGH or Mass General in super speed time if needed.  My hospital in Taunton doesn't have a NICU and is about a 40 minute drive from Boston without traffic (which never happens of course).  At our hospital tour, they told us it's only a 15 minute med flight from their helicopter pad to one of the Boston hospitals that have a NICU.

  • I understand your paranoia. I'm a NICU nurse in NY, and I think about that all the time. But enjoy yourself. We get babies from hours away that were delivered at small outlying hospitals. Even if this happens, a highly qualified team will be there to tend to your baby and bring them where they need to go. But if you're pregnancy is going fine, the chances of going into PTL are slim. Enjoy the Cape, it is beautiful. DH and I spend our honeymoon there.
