Just how popular is "Liam"?

I don't know a single person (child or adult) named Liam, but I keep hearing about how popular it is.  How many Liams do you know IRL?  We like it enough to use it regardless, but I'm curious.

Re: Just how popular is "Liam"?

  • My sister is naming her son Liam, shes actually in labor and should be having him anytime now.

  • I don't personally know anyone named Liam, though I perceive the name to be extremely popular. With 28,203 Liams born in the last five years (averaging to about 564 boys five and under in each state), I would consider it fairly popular. Any boy isn't yet likely to be one of three Liams in a given class, but it's unlikely he would go too long without meeting another.
  • I know one young Liam.

smo - congrulations on being an aunite soon!

  • I'm a labor and delivery nurse...seems Liam is VERY popular in the midwest.

Here's the link for the Social Security Administration's Baby Names by year.  I know Liam was in the top 100 for 2009.  You can also look up the top 100 by state.  HTH!

  • Unfortunately, I think it is getting super popular... I don't see the appeal of this name.
  • I know one Liam, my son. :)

I know 2 little kids named Liam and MH is a pediatric dentist and says he sees a ton of kids named Liam, so that is why he nixed it. I like it, but I do think it is gaining in popularity. A lot of people also use Liam as a nn for William, so just looking at the popularity of Liam doesn't give you a complete picture of how popular it is.
  • I've taught a few Liams, but know none that are adults.

I know at least one woman on my birth month board just used it for her son.

  • I know several adults named Liam. They are about 50/50 actually NAMED Liam and named William.

(Liam is apparently the new Topher...gotta get the back-end of the name too, right?)

  • I think I know 4 or 5 Liam's.  All under the age of 15.  Most are short for William.

Because of this I think you have to consider that it's probably more popular than it seems according to the SSA since they obviously can't account for nicknames in their statistics.

  • My cousin's name is William and goes by Liam.  He is (shoot I don't even know for sure) 9 or 10 years old?

  • It was 49 or so on the SSN list last year. So not popular, IMO.

I went on a date with a Liam in college 100 years ago. He was from Ireland. He's the only Liam I knew IRL, ever.

  • My nephew is 5 months old and named Liam. My brother and his wife had picked it out before they knew it was popular. When they went to an ultrasound the tech told them she had had 4 or 5 couples in the last week using Liam. I love the name and they haven't heard of anyone else  they know with the name. The bottom line is: if you love the name then use it and don't worry. I don't think it will ever be as popular as many others (Jacob, Phillip....)
  • None. It was the boy name we had picked out had DD been a boy. DH is stuck on using it if we have a boy in the future, but I don't know about it now. The appeal is wearing off for me. It's a nice name though.

  • I don't know any.  I LOVE the name myself, and it would be on our list if DH wasn't such a killjoy.  :)
  • It depends a LOT on where you live. Maybe it isn't so popular in Canada, but I hear it constantly here in DC. It's a very "hip" name in the northeast -- some times as a stand-alone name but far, far more often as a nickname for William -- the people who name their child William (which is either a top 10 or top 11 name every year for the last 10, and was #5 last year) are ALL calling their kids Liam. Not Bill or Will or Billy: Liam.

That means 18,000 "William" LIams on top of 8,000 "just Liams."

    Pretty darn popular.

  • I know at least three.  DH's cousin who is about 30 and two of our cousins have young sons named Liam as well.  We're both very Irish though so that is probably why we know so many.
  • I personally love the name and it is one of my top favorite boy names. I looked it up where I live, Texas, and the name wasn't on the top 100 list for 2009.

  • It really depends on where you live. For example:

There are four provinces in Canada where Liam is the #2 boy name (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia).

#4 in Manitoba, #8 in New Brunswick, #6 in Newfoundland/Labrador, #18 in Ontario, and it's not even in the top 25 in Quebec or the territories.

It's #13 in Canada overall -- which is much higher than in the States -- and it's on the rise.

Like pp's said, this isn't counting those who are named William who go by Liam.

I don't know many children/babies IRL... I've only ran into two baby Liam's in my entire life.

Personally I really love the name, but it's popularity is making me unsure. Our top two names right now are Liam and Connor and I have a feeling we'll end up going with Connor.

Wow...I live in Saskatchewan and I have never met a Liam!  Intersting!

Here's the link to the only Canadian name stats I can find! It's too bad we don't have something as comprehensive as the SSA list.

  • My coworker's DS (whom she had this year) is named Liam.  That's the only one I know of personally.  Although it does strike me as a very popular name.

  • It's definitely an upward trending name. It probably wouldnt be long before you ran into another one. Especially with the whole nickname for William thing (which I really dislike).

  • I know 3.  One is 2 years old, one is around 11 months old, and the other is 2 months old.  You also have to consider that this is a nn for William now.  And William is in the top 5 baby names.

  • Liam is like the new Ashley or Brittany of boy names. Everyone is naming their boy Liam and their girl Bella.

Why you don't hear it for any adults is because most adults go by Will or Bill. Since Liam is part of Wil(Liam) anyways...
