1st Trimester

Advice: Telling my boss

So I am 11 weeks and the bump is pretty obvious.  Really getting tired of hiding it because I'm sure everyone is already looking at me wondering if I'm pregnant or if I'm just gaining weight.

How long did you wait before you told your boss?

Re: Advice: Telling my boss

  • If I can help it, I don't plan to tell my boss until I'm safely out of 1st tri. Try posting this on 2nd tri. Maybe, they may have more suggestions.

  • I actually told my boss on Monday. It's still very early, but my job requires a lot of international travel, and I spent weeks 4 & 5 in Italy with 5 being a horrible m/s week, so I had to tell him soon, or suck it up and spend more miserable weeks far from home....  so, as soon as I saw the heartbeat on the ultrasound, I emailed him. it was actually a very anticlimactic experience and I'm glad I told him.

  • I plan to tell at the start of the second tri, if I can wait that long. I work with some nosy ladies who cannot wait for me to have a baby, so if they start to catch on earlier I may have to break the news earlier. I am a guidance counselor and my second tri will start around the second week of school-- such a stressful time of the school year. I plan to go to my principal with a plan for my maternity leave, since I will be missing some big events- class scheduling, step-up day, SATs. I think going in with a plan and not just dumping the news on him will make it MUCH easier to do.
  • I'm telling my boss in 2 weeks because I have to miss the afternoon because of a midwife "info session". I'll be just over 11wks. I will ask her not to tell coworkers. I don't plan on telling coworkers until 13 wks.

  • I SAH now, but with my first pregnancy I told my co-workers at 14 weeks. I didn't want to tell anyone until after the NTS results came in. I doubt that your bump is so huge that it is super obvious that you are pregnant.
  • I wanted to wait until 2nd tri until I told but I wasn't able to keep it a secret for that long. I know a lot want to wait until they feel they are past a point of danger. I told some people but told them to keep it to themselves. One person apparently wasn't able to so it got spread around the office a bit. But I'd kind of rather have people know I'm pregnant than think I'm getting fat. :) Most of the people found out after I had my first ultrasound and had seen the heartbeat too. So good luck!
  • Last time, I waited until 13 weeks.  I wanted to be safe and also to have a little bit of a plan about what I wanted to do in terms of maternity leave.  I also had an appointment right at 12-13 weeks, so after that, I felt safe to tell.

It's kind of up to you.  No harm telling, but if you want to wait, who cares if people think you're getting fat?  They'll know soon enough!

  • With DS I wanted to wait until second tri, but I couldn't wait and told my boss after my 8 week appointment.  I was glad because my insurance has a healthy baby program that I got more money back by signing up in 1st tri.
  • I told mine today (10 weeks).  I won't be telling co-workers for another 2 weeks though.
